LISBON: Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has hinted that the current season could be his final campaign as a professional footballer, potentially bringing one of the sport’s most celebrated careers to an end.

The 41-year-old Ronaldo made the comments in an interview following his wedding to longtime partner Georgina Rodriguez on Tuesday. He said he was now considering a future centered more around his family.

“This could be my final year in football, and I want to leave a great legacy,” Ronaldo said, according to media reports.

Ronaldo said he had already planned his life after football and would have plenty of activities to keep him occupied. He said he wanted to spend more time enjoying himself, traveling, playing and watching padel, and appreciating the achievements of his career.

He described his football journey as one that had involved 25 years of sacrifice.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner and five-time Champions League champion has won league titles in England, Spain, Italy and Saudi Arabia. He is also the leading scorer in men’s international football.

Ronaldo has spent nearly four years with Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr, where he has one year remaining on his contract.

When asked in July whether the upcoming FIFA World Cup would be his final appearance at the tournament, Ronaldo said he would consult his family before making a decision and would do so with a “peaceful mind.”
