Federal budget delay linked to political deadlock over key legislation

Federal budget

ISLAMABAD: The delay in the federal budget has been caused by a political deadlock over key legislation, parliamentary sources said on Tuesday.

According to sources, the government wants to pass important legislation before the budget session, as the proposed laws are expected to have significant implications for the upcoming fiscal year. However, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) is opposing the proposed amendments.

Sources said PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has conveyed a clear stance during his address in Shigar Valley, adding that the party is resisting the proposed legislative changes. If the amendments are not approved before the budget session, changes in the next financial year may not be possible.

Parliamentary sources further revealed that efforts are underway to convince the PPP, with key political figures assigned the task of negotiations.

They added that Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is currently busy with election campaigning in Gilgit-Baltistan, and a new date for the budget session is likely to be announced only after securing his agreement.

Meanwhile, The federal government will not present the budget on June 5, according to official sources.

Sources said the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting scheduled for June 3 has been postponed, and a formal notification has also been issued.

Officials added that a new date for the federal budget presentation has not yet been finalized. However, it is likely to be presented on either June 8 or June 12.

Meanwhile, sources in the National Assembly said June 10 is also being considered as a possible date for the budget presentation.

According to the notification, a new date for the NEC meeting will be announced later.

Ex-PM Nawaz Sharif criticises development delays in Gilgit-Baltistan

Ex-PM Nawaz

GILGIT:  Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo and former prime minister  Nawaz Sharif has criticised the pace of development in Gilgit-Baltistan, saying many projects remain incomplete and road conditions in the region are a source of concern.

Addressing an election rally in Gilgit, he said he had visited Skardu and Gilgit several times during his tenure as prime minister and expressed disappointment over the current state of infrastructure.

“The roads are in poor condition, full of potholes. I feel pain seeing this,” he said, questioning why key projects such as the Mansehra-Gilgit road had not been completed.

Nawaz Sharif said he did not want to criticise any political party but questioned why development initiatives were neglected despite repeated announcements. He added that his party has always sought votes based on performance rather than criticism of opponents.

He claimed that hospitals, hydroelectric projects, and the Nagar development project were initiated by his government, and asked which other party had delivered similar work in the region.

The PML-N leader also pointed to the limited flight operations at Gilgit Airport, saying it should be expanded and could handle significantly more traffic than the current three weekly flights.

He said future plans include expanding healthcare facilities so residents do not need to travel to Islamabad for treatment, improving tourism for job creation, and providing interest-free loans, scholarships, laptops, and a women’s university for local students.

Nawaz Sharif also referred to the Diamer-Bhasha Dam project, saying land acquisition funds were allocated during his tenure but the project remains incomplete, adding that timely completion would have benefited both Gilgit-Baltistan and the wider country.

Over 20 PTI MPAs express discontent with KP chief minister

Over 20 PTI

PESHAWAR: More than 20 lawmakers from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with Chief Minister Sohail Afridi over governance and administrative issues, according to sources.

Sources said the disgruntled members have raised concerns about deteriorating law and order in the province, alleging that the chief minister has been unable to assert authority over the bureaucracy. They claimed that several officials are reportedly more responsive to the federal government than the provincial leadership.

The lawmakers also complained that their repeated concerns had not been addressed, including issues related to uneven distribution of development funds and dissatisfaction over the expansion of the provincial cabinet.

According to sources, the dissatisfied members may soon convene a meeting to discuss their concerns and formulate a joint strategy.

However, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Minister Shafi Jan rejected reports of internal divisions, calling them false, fabricated, and baseless.

He said all PTI members of the provincial assembly are united under the leadership of Chief Minister Sohail Afridi and remain committed to party discipline. Shafi Jan added that those hoping for divisions within the party would be disappointed, stressing that the chief minister enjoys full confidence from the party’s founding leadership.

Pakistan proposes sharp tax hike on solar, electric and hybrid vehicles in budget

Pakistan proposes

ISLAMABAD: The federal government is considering significant tax increases on solar panels and electric and hybrid vehicles in the upcoming fiscal year 2026–27 budget, according to official sources.

Under the proposed measures, the General Sales Tax (GST) on solar panels is expected to be raised from 10% to 18%. Similarly, the GST on electric vehicles may be increased from 1% to 18%, while hybrid vehicles could see tax rates rise from 8% to 18%.

Officials said the proposals also include higher taxation on motorcycles, rickshaws, trucks, buses, electric pickups, tractors, and double-cabin vehicles, which could result in a broad increase in transportation and renewable energy costs.

Sources indicated that the planned tax hikes are likely to make solar panels and electric and hybrid vehicles more expensive for consumers if approved.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF), according to sources, has opposed granting tax exemptions. However, the government is still attempting to persuade the lender to allow relief for the renewable energy sector.

The IMF has reportedly maintained that any tax exemptions must be offset through alternative revenue measures to ensure fiscal balance.

Officials further said that, based on current proposals, prices across the electric mobility and solar energy sectors are expected to rise if the new tax structure is implemented.

The IMF has also reportedly suggested increasing GST on electric vehicles to 18% and raising tax rates on hybrid vehicles to the same level.

In addition, industry stakeholders have urged the government to release Rs327 billion in pending tax refunds to the textile sector and have called for reductions in electricity and gas tariffs. Exporters could potentially receive relief of up to Rs100 billion, although officials say prospects for a large-scale relief package remain limited.

Achakzai calls for equal share of resources for all provinces

Achakzai calls

CHAMAN: Opposition Leader in the National Assembly and chief of the Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party, Mahmood Khan Achakzai, said on Friday that Pakistan cannot achieve progress without ensuring equal distribution of resources and powers among all four provinces.

Addressing a public gathering at Government Model School Ground in Chaman, Achakzai said the only solution to the country’s political and administrative challenges lies in restoring the spirit of the 1973 Constitution and recognizing the elected parliament as the sole source of authority.

He stressed that Afghanistan must respect Pakistan’s sovereignty, adding that both neighboring countries are closely linked and dependent on each other.

Achakzai said war is not the solution to regional issues and emphasized that dialogue and negotiations are the only path toward peace and development in the region.

The veteran politician also called for the establishment of trade free zones in border areas and urged tax relief measures to strengthen the economic condition of tribal communities.

He further stated that all nationalities in Pakistan must be granted equal rights, warning that the country cannot move forward unless all provinces receive a fair share in resources and decision-making powers.

PTI KP President Junaid Akbar detained, expelled from GB

PTI KP President

GILGIT: Police detained Junaid Akbar and several of his associates before expelling them from Gilgit-Baltistan over alleged violations of the election code of conduct, officials said on Friday.

According to police authorities, Junaid Akbar and his companions were taken into custody from the Henzel area of Gilgit-Baltistan.

Reacting to the development, Barrister Gohar Ali Khan condemned the action, saying detaining Junaid Akbar and preventing him from participating in the election campaign was unacceptable.

Barrister Gohar said restricting political campaigning before elections amounts to pre-poll rigging and warned that denying political space in Gilgit-Baltistan would harm democratic values.

Meanwhile, PTI Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram termed the move “political victimization,” alleging that keeping PTI leaders away from the election campaign was an attempt to suppress political freedom and influence public opinion ahead of the polls.

He urged the Speaker of the National Assembly to intervene in the matter and claimed efforts were being made to create a one-sided political field in Gilgit-Baltistan.

However, Gilgit-Baltistan Interior Minister Sajid Ali Baig defended the action, saying Junaid Akbar and his associates violated the election code of conduct.

In an interview, the minister said the PTI leader reached Jaglot without prior permission and addressed a rally despite being instructed to obtain a no-objection certificate (NOC).

He added that Junaid Akbar also organized a rally in Gilgit without authorization and was taken into custody along with his associates while traveling toward Ghizer.

The minister maintained that the PTI leader was expelled from Gilgit-Baltistan for violating election rules and warned that action would be taken against anyone breaching the code of conduct without discrimination.

President Zardari vows support for establishment

President Zardari

MORO: President Asif Ali Zardari said on Friday that all institutions and political forces must work together to strengthen the country and support the establishment.

Addressing party workers in Moro, Zardari said Pakistan had taught India a lesson during a week-long conflict, claiming that India “came to its senses” after its aircraft were shot down.

He also criticized the Indian government, alleging that atrocities against Muslims in India are not highlighted in the media and accusing New Delhi of lacking the ability to make rational decisions.

The president said Pakistan’s defense strategy guarantees peace and stability in the region and reiterated that collective efforts are needed to strengthen both the state and national institutions.

“We will all work together to strengthen the hands of the establishment and make the country stronger,” Zardari said during his address.

PM Shehbaz announces reduction of Rs22 in petrol, diesel prices each

PM Shehbaz

LAHORE: The federal government on Friday decided to reduce petrol and diesel prices by Rs 22 per litre each.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif said that providing relief to the public was among his top priorities. The premier had promised the nation that relief would be provided to the public as soon as there was a room to do so.

That promise had now been fulfilled exactly as stated and served as a gift to the public on the third day of Eid-ul-Azha.

It is pertinent to mention that last week, relief was also provided to the public through reductions in petrol and diesel prices.

Even under the most difficult circumstances, the federal government continued providing relief to the people and offered fuel subsidies for public and goods transport, as well as for motorcycle and rickshaw users.

At a time when people in other countries in the region were standing in queues to obtain petrol, timely measures taken by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ensured that petrol and diesel remained available to the public in Pakistan.

During the worst global oil crisis, despite rising international oil prices, the PM prevented increases in domestic fuel prices by providing subsidies of over Rs 130, thereby continuing to deliver relief to the public.
