Pakistan Goods Transporters begin indefinite strike over fuel prices, taxes
ISLAMABAD: The All Pakistan Goods Transporters Alliance announced an indefinite nationwide strike from Saturday, August 8, over rising fuel prices, daily petroleum price adjustments and the imposition of a 7% withholding tax on the transport sector.
Alliance President Malik Shehzad Awan confirmed the strike, saying that the federal government had invited transport representatives for talks on Monday.
He said a committee had been formed to meet with government officials, adding that the strike would continue until the negotiations and the announcement of the alliance’s future course of action.
Malik Shehzad Awan said earlier negotiations with authorities at the Commissioner’s Office had failed, leaving transporters with no option but to proceed with the protest.
The goods transporters’ alliance is protesting against increases in petrol and diesel prices, the policy of determining petroleum prices on a daily basis, and the newly imposed 7% withholding tax on the transport sector.
