Tens of thousands of migrants enter Spain from Morocco

MADRID: Nearly 60,000 migrants crossed into Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta from Morocco in a mass border crossing that left dozens dead, according to Spanish authorities.

Officials said thousands of migrants entered Ceuta by land and sea in one of the largest attempted crossings in recent years. Spanish authorities said 34 people were killed during the incidents linked to the mass crossing.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described the incident as a violation of Spain’s territorial sovereignty, accusing human trafficking networks of encouraging illegal migration by misrepresenting a ruling by Spain’s Supreme Court.

Sánchez said authorities were accelerating the repatriation of migrants who entered Ceuta illegally and thanked Moroccan officials for their cooperation in managing the situation.

Ceuta and Melilla are Spain’s two autonomous enclaves in North Africa and the European Union’s only land borders with Africa, making them key entry points for migrants seeking to reach Europe.

BOSTON:  FIFA’s decision to appoint an all-Argentine officiating team for the 2026 World Cup quarterfinal between Morocco and France has prompted criticism and speculation among some football fans on social media.

FIFA announced the match officials for Thursday’s quarterfinal in Boston, naming an Argentine referee, two assistant referees, a reserve assistant referee and a fourth official.

The appointments drew reactions online from users who questioned why officials from a country still competing in the tournament had been assigned to the match. Some posts alleged favoritism, while others criticized FIFA’s referee selection process without providing evidence.

Among those commenting was former West Indies cricket captain Carlos Brathwaite, who questioned the appointments in posts on X.

FIFA has not publicly responded to the criticism.

Under FIFA regulations, referees are generally prohibited from officiating matches involving their own national team, but officials from other participating nations may be assigned to games provided no conflict of interest exists.

Shark predicts winner of World Cup 2026 opening match

 With just six days remaining until the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a shark in Brazil has made an early prediction for the tournament’s opening match.

The World Cup, jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, is set to kick off on June 11, featuring 48 teams competing for football’s biggest prize.

According to international media reports, a female shark named “Retenia,” housed at the Aquario aquarium in Rio de Janeiro, predicted a victory for Brazil in the tournament’s opening match against Morocco.

As part of a promotional event held on Wednesday, divers placed two boxes bearing the names of Brazil and Morocco on the floor of the aquarium. Retenia swam toward and selected the box marked with Brazil, signaling her prediction for the outcome of the match.

Reuters reported that the aquarium organized the activity as an interactive attraction designed to engage visitors and raise awareness about sharks.

Aquarium Chief Executive Marcelo Szpilman said the initiative aims to help change public perceptions about sharks and encourage greater understanding of the species.

He described the prediction event as a fun and highly interactive way to attract public interest while promoting marine conservation awareness.

While the prediction carries no scientific weight, it has added a lighthearted touch to the growing excitement surrounding the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
