Tax return filing deadline tomorrow as late-filer category set to end

ISLAMABAD: The deadline for filing income tax returns for the current tax year is September 30, after which taxpayers filing late could face significantly higher penalties, sources said Tuesday.

Sources said the category of “late filer” will be abolished nationwide from October 1.

Under the revised penalties, the fine for late filing will increase from Rs1,000 to Rs25,000, while the penalty for late-filing associations of persons (AOPs) will rise from Rs10,000 to Rs50,000.

For companies, the penalty will increase from Rs20,000 to Rs100,000, according to the sources.

A Federal Board of Revenue spokesperson confirmed that September 30 is the deadline for filing income tax returns and said taxpayers should submit the required supporting documents along with their returns.

The spokesperson warned that action could be taken against taxpayers who conceal assets or provide incorrect information.

The authorities may also use measures, including freezing or recovering funds from bank accounts, to collect outstanding tax liabilities.
