In a viral social media video, Nuriya explained that following her father’s death, she became the sole breadwinner for her family and, due to extreme poverty, was forced to disguise herself as a boy to work. Despite her efforts to conceal her identity, her secret was eventually discovered, leading to her arrest.

This incident comes amid the Taliban’s continued enforcement of strict restrictions on women’s education, employment, and mobility. Thousands of Afghan women have lost access to jobs in both public and private sectors due to these limitations.

Nuriya’s arrest has sparked widespread outrage on social media, drawing renewed attention to the challenges and basic rights issues facing Afghan women under Taliban rule.
