Shakira wins tax case in Spain as court orders refund of millions

MADRID: Colombian singer Shakira has won a legal case in Spain after a high court ordered tax authorities to refund millions of euros, including penalties and interest payments.

According to court documents, the total amount exceeds €60 million in a dispute linked to the 2011 tax year. The court ruled that authorities failed to prove Shakira spent 183 days in Spain during that period, which is the legal threshold for tax residency.

Under Spanish law, individuals are required to pay income tax if they reside in the country for at least 183 days in a year. The court found that Shakira had spent only 163 days in Spain in 2011.

As a result, all penalties imposed by tax authorities have been annulled.

The ruling is separate from a previous tax fraud case that Shakira settled in 2023.

The singer is currently preparing for her world tour and is expected to begin a series of concerts in Madrid in September.
