ISLAMABAD: Foreign Office said Thursday that Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir’s recent visit to Iran was not made on behalf of US President Donald Trump or the United States, but was part of Pakistan’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to help ease regional tensions and find a negotiated solution to the crisis.
Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi, speaking at a weekly briefing in Islamabad, said Asim Munir held discussions with Iranian officials on reducing tensions in the region and exploring diplomatic avenues to resolve the crisis.
“The visit was part of Pakistan’s ongoing diplomatic efforts,” Andrabi said, stressing that the field marshal was not representing Trump or Washington during the trip.
The spokesperson said Pakistan was maintaining contacts with brotherly countries as part of its efforts to de-escalate tensions and contribute to a resolution of the broader Middle East crisis.
Pakistan working to promote regional peace
Andrabi said Pakistan’s diplomatic initiatives were aimed at promoting peace and stability in the region and helping create conditions for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway for global energy shipments.
He said the Iranian leadership had appreciated Pakistan’s role and its efforts to facilitate dialogue and reduce tensions.
Prime minister to attend SCO summit
The Foreign Office spokesperson also said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif would travel to Bishkek to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit, where he was expected to hold bilateral meetings with leaders and officials from participating countries.
Pakistan has assumed the SCO chairmanship for a one-year term and is scheduled to host the organization’s summit in Islamabad in 2027.
