KARACHI: The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has launched an investigation into an alleged social media campaign targeting Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon and his son in connection with the death of Mir Raza Ali in Karachi.
An NCCIA Karachi official said the agency received a written complaint from Memon’s lawyer a day earlier, alleging that false content circulating on social media had damaged the reputation of the minister and his son.
The official said the agency has started examining the complaint and on Monday sent requests to around 10 social media platforms, including Facebook, X, WhatsApp and Instagram, seeking information related to the alleged posts.
According to officials, investigators are working to identify individuals operating the accounts, creating and sharing the content.
Details of users who uploaded or circulated the posts have been sought from social media platforms, along with information on accounts that later deleted the content.
NCCIA sources said further developments are expected in the coming days, and notices may be issued to individuals found involved in creating, spreading or sharing allegedly false and fabricated posts.
Memon had approached the cybercrime agency after alleging that a coordinated online campaign was launched against him and his son following Mir Raza Ali’s death.
In his complaint, Memon said social media posts falsely claimed that the guesthouse where Raza was allegedly tortured belonged to him and that his son Rawal Memon left for London after the incident.
The complaint also alleged that some posts accused Memon and his political party of protecting those involved in the case and influencing the investigation process.
Memon denied the allegations, calling them baseless, and requested a forensic investigation of the social media accounts involved. He also sought action against those responsible for spreading what he described as a coordinated misinformation campaign.
