Actress Saba Qamar responds to Javeria Abbasi’s criticism

KARACHI: Pakistani actress Saba Qamar recently addressed criticism from fellow actress Javeria Abbasi through a story posted on her Instagram account.

Saba Qamar clarified that her previous remarks had been misinterpreted, stating, “Astaghfirullah, my words were misunderstood.” She further emphasized that everyone has the right to express their opinions, and societal dialogue is not possible without protecting freedom of speech.

The actress highlighted that freedom of expression is a fundamental right, allowing individuals to share their thoughts openly.

She expressed concern over the limitations imposed on what people feel they can say or do, adding that it is disheartening when fear or restrictions prevent people from speaking their minds.

“I hope we move towards a society where every voice is heard with respect and without fear,” Saba Qamar remarked.

The post sparked mixed reactions on social media. Some users criticized the discussion, urging that minor issues should not be exaggerated and suggested that Saba avoid responding further. Others supported her viewpoint, agreeing with her stance on freedom of expression.

The controversy stems from Javeria Abbasi’s recent appearance on Ahmed Butt’s podcast, where she commented on the importance of respecting the city that made someone famous and expressed objections to Saba Qamar’s approach.

The comments relate back to an earlier program where Saba Qamar, when asked about relocating permanently to Karachi, had replied “Astaghfirullah” and stated that she does not prefer the Sindh capital.

The controversy surrounding actress Saba Qamar’s remarks about permanently relocating to Karachi continues to dominate discussions in Pakistan’s showbiz circles, with criticism and counter-responses still unfolding.

The latest reaction came during a podcast hosted by renowned television host and comedian Ahmed Ali Butt, where actress Javeria Abbasi appeared as a guest. Known for her graceful presence and strong acting skills, Javeria shared her views on the ongoing debate.

While speaking to Ahmed Ali Butt, Javeria Abbasi criticized Saba Qamar’s statement, saying that the city which gives an artist fame and recognition deserves respect. She added that such remarks are inappropriate and should be avoided.

Javeria further stated that every individual has an emotional attachment to their city, and no matter where one settles in the world, their hometown always holds a special place in their heart—something they neither speak against nor tolerate criticism of.

A clip from Javeria Abbasi’s interview quickly went viral on social media, once again igniting a heated debate among users, with opinions sharply divided between supporters and critics of Karachi.

Amid the renewed discussion, Saba Qamar shared an Instagram story clarifying her earlier remarks. She explained that the word “Astaghfirullah” is commonly used to seek forgiveness from Allah, and that her statement had been misunderstood by many.

In a subsequent post, Saba Qamar emphasized that everyone has the right to express their opinion. She stressed that freedom of expression is important and that no one should be forced to suppress their views due to fear or restrictions.

It is worth recalling that the controversy began when Saba Qamar, during an interview, responded with “Astaghfirullah” when asked about permanently moving to Karachi. The remark was widely criticized by Karachi residents, who found it offensive, triggering strong backlash against the actress at the time as well.

KARACHI: Veteran Pakistani actress Javeria Abbasi has described her wedding ceremony as a “so-she wedding,” a light-hearted reference to its intimate and elegant nature.

The actress had announced her second marriage last September, sharing pictures from her Nikah ceremony with businessman Adeel Ahmed. Reports indicated that the couple’s Nikah took place on March 15 this year in a small, private ceremony held at home.

According to Javeria, she first met her husband Adeel at a dinner hosted by a mutual friend, where their friendship began. The proposal, she revealed, came from Adeel himself.

Actress Javeria Abbasi has revealed that her marriage ceremony was a “So-She wedding,” a term she used to describe a blend of Sunni and Shia marriage traditions.

Speaking on a television show recently, Javeria shared that her Nikah was solemnised under the customs of both sects, making it a dual-Nikah ceremony.

Expressing her happiness over her married life, the actress said that all religious rituals were performed by both families and close friends during the wedding.
