LONDON: Jemima Goldsmith, the former wife of jailed former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, has urged the British government to speak out over his detention and what she described as alleged human rights violations.
Goldsmith said Khan had spent three years in custody and had been subjected to prolonged isolation. She called on the British government to end its silence and raise concerns over his treatment.
She also claimed that a recent Supreme Court order concerning Khan’s medical care had not been fully implemented and urged British authorities to speak clearly in support of his fundamental rights.
Her comments came amid renewed controversy over Khan’s treatment in custody. Pakistan’s Supreme Court had ordered that Khan be transferred to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for medical care and examined by a medical panel that included his personal physician. The government subsequently challenged the order.
Khan, 73, has been imprisoned in Rawalpindi since August 2023 after being convicted in several cases. He and his supporters have described the cases as politically motivated, while the government has rejected allegations of mistreatment and medical neglect.
Goldsmith’s appeal comes as international cricket figures have also called for Khan to receive humane treatment and proper medical care in prison.
