KARACHI — The Department of Agriculture and Agribusiness Management, University of Karachi, announced the successful signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the University of Karachi and Bayer Pakistan Pvt. Ltd. The signing ceremony took place at the Vice Chancellor’s Secretariat.

The agreement marks a major step toward advancing agricultural development and sustainability in Pakistan. Through this collaboration, both institutions aim to introduce high-quality seeds, advanced biotechnology traits, and innovative crop protection products designed to enhance farm productivity, food quality, and overall food security across the country.

The MoU was signed by Prof. Dr. Khalid Mahmood Iraqi, Vice Chancellor of the University of Karachi, and Mr. Ahmed Ali, Managing Director and CEO of Bayer Pakistan Pvt. Ltd. Prof. Dr. M. Faheem Akbar, Chairperson of the Department of Agriculture and Agribusiness Management, was also present at the ceremony.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Faheem Akbar highlighted the importance of strengthening industry–academia linkages, emphasizing that partnerships like this promote research collaboration, technology transfer, and innovation in agriculture — key drivers for sustainable growth.

The collaboration between the University of Karachi and Bayer Pakistan is expected to create long-term benefits for farmers, improve agricultural productivity, and contribute to ensuring food security in Pakistan.

The Department of Food Science & Technology at the University of Karachi organized a seminar on Thursday to commemorate World Food Day 2025.


The event was held to raise awareness about the global challenges of hunger, food insecurity, and the importance of sustainable food systems in ensuring a healthy future for all.

Faculty members, students, and guests from academia and the food industry attended the event. The speakers highlighted that World Food Day serves as an important reminder to adopt responsible consumption habits, reduce food waste, and promote sustainable agricultural and food processing practices.

Addressing the participants, the faculty emphasized that Pakistan, being an agriculture-based country, has immense potential to strengthen its food system through innovation, research, and modern technology. They also stressed the role of youth and researchers in developing new methods to improve food preservation, enhance nutritional value, and ensure food safety standards.

The seminar provided an opportunity for students to engage in discussions on global and national food issues. Participants shared their views on how climate change, population growth, and water scarcity are impacting food production and access.

World Food Day is observed annually on October 16 to commemorate the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. The University of Karachi’s Department of Food Science & Technology continues to play a key role in promoting education, research, and awareness on issues related to food quality, safety, and sustainability.

The event concluded with a note of appreciation for the organizers and participants, reaffirming the department’s commitment to advancing food science education and contributing to a food-secure and sustainable Pakistan.

Key deadlines: Aptitude tests for Visual Studies (B.Arch, BFA, B.Design) on Oct. 18; Pharm D/BS entrance exams Oct. 25–26 (apply by Oct. 10). Open merit BS (morning) from Oct. 27–Nov. 7; evening programs Nov. 17–28. Reserved/self-finance seats open Oct. 27/Nov. 6.

Eligibility: 45%+ in HSSC (50% for Visual Studies); up to 5 program choices. Submit CNIC, marks sheets, character certificate. Hafiz-e-Quran get +20 marks. Foreigners need IBCC/IELTS 5.0.
