Melissa becomes century’s most powerful Hurricane

Melissa

Kingston/Havana: Hurricane Melissa, the most powerful storm to strike the Caribbean in decades, hit Jamaica on Wednesday and is now moving toward Cuba, prompting large-scale evacuations and emergency precautions.

According to international media reports, more than 700,000 people across Cuba have been evacuated to safer areas due to fears of flooding, storm surges, and severe destruction.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said that Melissa initially struck Jamaica as a Category 5 hurricane, generating winds of up to 185 kilometers per hour, before weakening slightly to Category 4 as it advanced toward Cuba.

Heavy rainfall, flash floods, and landslides have been reported across the Caribbean, with at least seven deaths confirmed so far — three in Jamaica, three in Haiti, and one in the Dominican Republic.

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness warned that the nation’s infrastructure is “not built to withstand a Category 5 hurricane,” urging citizens to remain indoors and cooperate with emergency services.

Melissa is expected to continue moving northwest, bringing torrential rain and destructive winds to parts of eastern Cuba and the Bahamas in the coming hours. Regional disaster response teams remain on high alert.

The most powerful storm of the year, Hurricane Melissa, has begun battering parts of the Caribbean, according to international news agencies.

Classified as a Category 5 hurricane, Melissa has already caused torrential rains across Haiti, leaving at least three people dead. Authorities reported that flights have been suspended in southern Haiti, while more than 3,000 residents have been moved to emergency shelters.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) stated that Melissa’s winds have reached speeds of up to 280 kilometers per hour (174 mph). The storm is expected to make landfall in Jamaica later today before moving toward eastern Cuba and the Bahamas.

In anticipation of the storm, Jamaican authorities have urged residents to evacuate low-lying areas and move to designated shelters.

Jamaican Prime Minister has warned of the potential for widespread destruction, emphasizing the government’s preparedness for emergency response operations.

Brazilian model harassed by food delivery agent in Bengaluru hotel

Brazilian model

Bengaluru: A Brazilian model was allegedly harassed by a food delivery agent at a hotel in Bengaluru, India, according to Indian media reports.

Police said the incident took place when the model, who was staying at a hotel in Karnataka’s capital, received an online food order delivered by a part-time agent. The accused allegedly touched her inappropriately and misbehaved while handing over the parcel.

In her complaint to the police, the model stated that she had ordered food through an online delivery app, and upon delivery, the man behaved indecently and attempted to physically harass her.

According to reports, Deputy Commissioner of Police confirmed the incident, identifying the accused as Kumar Rao, a college student who works as a part-time delivery agent. Police said the suspect was arrested the same day after the harassment complaint was filed.

Indian Minister blames Australian cricketers for harassment incident

Indore: In a shocking statement, Madhya Pradesh’s Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Kailash Vijayvargiya, has blamed two Australian women cricketers for the recent sexual harassment incident in Indore, suggesting that the players themselves were at fault.

The controversy erupted two days ago when a man riding a motorcycle allegedly touched one of the visiting Australian cricketers inappropriately while she was walking from her hotel to a café. The accused fled the scene but was later arrested by local police.

However, instead of condemning the act, BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya said the Australian players were partly responsible for the incident. “It was their mistake to go out without informing anyone. This incident will serve as a lesson for them to be more cautious in the future,” he stated.

The minister further admitted that the episode reflected a “security failure” but maintained that the players should have been more careful.

His remarks have sparked outrage across India, with the opposition Congress party calling the comments “disgraceful and reflective of BJP’s mentality.”
Congress leader Arun Yadav said, “The entire nation is ashamed of what happened. Instead of protecting women, BJP leaders are blaming the victims — this exposes their regressive mindset.”

The incident has once again reignited debate in India over women’s safety and the repeated tendency of public figures to engage in victim-blaming rather than demanding accountability.

US seeks balance with Pakistan, India: Marco Rubio

US seeks

NEW YORK: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Washington seeks to strengthen its strategic partnership with Pakistan while ensuring its relations with India remain unaffected.

“We see an opportunity to expand our strategic relationship with Pakistan, and I think we’ve made – that’s our job, is to try to figure out how many countries we can find how we can work with on things of common interest,” Rubio told journalists, traveling with him En Route to Doha, Qatar, according to a transcript of his remarks released by the State Department..

He was asked if India has raised concerns about the United States’s growing relationship with Pakistan, which have improved rapidly over the past few months with President Donald Trump hosting Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir at the White House.

“They really haven’t – I mean, we know they’re concerned for obvious reasons because of the tensions that have existed between Pakistan and India historically,” Rubio said in response to a question if New Delhi raised concerns over Pakistan ties.

The top American diplomat said New Delhi has to understand that the United States needs to have relations with a lot of countries.

“But, I think they have to understand we have to have relations with a lot of different countries,” he noted.

“So, I think the Indians are very mature when it comes to diplomacy and things of that nature. Look, they have some relationships with countries that we don’t have relationships with,” Rubio added.

Rubio added: “So, it’s part of a mature, pragmatic foreign policy. I don’t think anything we’re doing with Pakistan comes at the expense of our relationship or friendship with India, which is deep, historic, and important.”

The relationship between the United States have grown dramatically under President Donald Trump, whose administration has hailed Pakistan as a “phenomenal” counter-terrorism partner.

The two countries have also signed a $500 million agreement on exploration of rare earth, with Pakistan recently shipping the first consignment this month.

Islamabad’s praise for President Trump’s role in working out a ceasefire in May conflict with India and nomination for Nobel Peace Prize for the U.S. leader have also generated goodwill for the ties.

In August, Rubio said every single day the United States keeps an eye on what happens between India and Pakistan, the two nuclear powers who fought a deadly 87-hour long conflict in May.

President Trump announced on May 10, the two countries agreed to a ceasefire, something Pakistan openly acknowledged while India denied US had any role.

Washington’s ties with India have been strained over a delay in trade agreement and Washington’s 50% tariff on Indian goods for its purchases of Russian oil.
