Fast bowler Mohammad Abbas reaches 900 first-class wickets

LONDON: Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Abbas reached a major career milestone on Thursday by completing 900 wickets in first-class cricket during the second Test against England at Lord’s.

Abbas achieved the landmark in his 222nd first-class match. He dismissed England opener Ben Duckett for 17 during the opening session to claim his 900th first-class wicket.

The 36-year-old has maintained an impressive first-class record, with a bowling average of 20.43. He has taken 57 five-wicket hauls and 15 10-wicket match hauls in his career.

Abbas also moved to fifth on the list of leading first-class wicket-takers in the 21st century. England’s James Anderson leads the list with 1,157 wickets, followed by South Africa’s Simon Harmer with 1,056, Sri Lanka’s Malinda Pushpakumara with 1,010 and England’s Tim Murtagh with 959.

Abbas made an immediate impact in the opening session at Lord’s, claiming four England wickets as the hosts reached 248 for 9 after 56 overs. He also dismissed England captain Joe Root, adding a major wicket to his impressive spell.

SYLHET: Mohammad Abbas achieved another major milestone in his Test career by becoming one of the few Pakistani fast bowlers to claim 100 wickets in overseas Test matches.

The 36-year-old reached the landmark during the second Test against Bangladesh national cricket team when he dismissed captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, caught behind by the wicketkeeper.

Abbas continued his strong spell by also removing openers Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Tanzid Hasan, putting the hosts under early pressure.

He became the sixth Pakistani fast bowler to take 100 Test wickets away from home, joining Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Imran Khan, Mohammad Amir and Umar Gul.

Among Pakistani bowlers with more than 100 overseas Test wickets, Abbas holds the best bowling average at 23.02.

He has taken 109 wickets in 51 Test innings, with only nine of those wickets coming in Pakistan and the rest collected in overseas conditions.

Abbas also starred in the previous Test, taking six wickets, and has been instrumental in troubling Bangladesh’s batting lineup throughout the series.

DHAKA: Mohammad Abbas has eclipsed legendary fast bowlers Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis in terms of Test bowling average following another impressive performance against Bangladesh national cricket team in Dhaka.

The 36-year-old seamer delivered a superb spell in the first Test, claiming five wickets for 92 runs in Bangladesh’s first innings.

Playing his 28th Test match, Abbas has now taken 105 wickets at an outstanding average of 22.95, giving him a better bowling average than two of Pakistan’s greatest pace icons.

In first-class cricket, Abbas has enjoyed a remarkable career, collecting 880 wickets in 216 matches at an average of 20.34. His five-wicket haul in Dhaka was the 56th of his first-class career.

The latest milestone further underlines Abbas’s reputation as one of Pakistan’s most effective red-ball bowlers, known for his precision, consistency, and ability to exploit seam movement.
