Fast bowler Mohammad Abbas reaches 900 first-class wickets

LONDON: Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Abbas reached a major career milestone on Thursday by completing 900 wickets in first-class cricket during the second Test against England at Lord’s.

Abbas achieved the landmark in his 222nd first-class match. He dismissed England opener Ben Duckett for 17 during the opening session to claim his 900th first-class wicket.

The 36-year-old has maintained an impressive first-class record, with a bowling average of 20.43. He has taken 57 five-wicket hauls and 15 10-wicket match hauls in his career.

Abbas also moved to fifth on the list of leading first-class wicket-takers in the 21st century. England’s James Anderson leads the list with 1,157 wickets, followed by South Africa’s Simon Harmer with 1,056, Sri Lanka’s Malinda Pushpakumara with 1,010 and England’s Tim Murtagh with 959.

Abbas made an immediate impact in the opening session at Lord’s, claiming four England wickets as the hosts reached 248 for 9 after 56 overs. He also dismissed England captain Joe Root, adding a major wicket to his impressive spell.

Naseem Shah ruled out of PSL indefinitely due to injury

KARACHI: Pakistan fast bowler Naseem Shah has been ruled out of the Pakistan Super League for an indefinite period due to injury.

Franchise Rawalpindi Pindiz confirmed the development, stating that Naseem sustained a side injury during a match against Karachi Kings.

According to team management, the fast bowler will remain unavailable until further notice. The medical staff is closely monitoring his recovery, with hopes that he may return in the later stages of the tournament after completing rehabilitation and obtaining fitness clearance.

The franchise also expressed full support for Naseem Shah, assuring that he will receive complete backing throughout his recovery period.

KARACHI: Pakistan’s fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi has revealed that he considers Australian pacer Mitchell Starc as his cricket role model and is eagerly looking forward to meeting him soon.

Shaheen said that whenever he played alongside Starc against Australia, their interactions were encouraging, and Starc always motivated him.

He also shared that watching Starc’s 2015 Cricket World Cup spell left a lasting impression, prompting him to follow Starc’s career closely.

Shaheen credited the performances of both Mitchell Starc and Trent Boult for helping him improve his skills on the cricket field, describing them as true icons for young cricketers.

Starc, in recent years, has not only broken records held by Wasim Akram but has also become a role model for aspiring fast bowlers.

SYDNEY: Former Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath has been removed from the radio commentary panel, just two days before the start of the Ashes series, Australian media reported.

According to reports, McGrath was dropped due to his association with an online gambling company. The national broadcaster has a strict policy prohibiting employees or affiliates from having ties with gambling firms.

McGrath’s involvement with the gambling company was linked to support for the McGrath Foundation, which he co-founded. The broadcaster stated that the decision to part ways with McGrath was mutual.

This move comes in line with the broadcaster’s policy, which previously affected former fast bowler Mitchell Johnson in 2022 under similar circumstances.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani fast bowler Haris Rauf has emphasized that winning matches is his top priority and expressed his readiness to play Test cricket if given the opportunity.

Speaking to the media after Pakistan’s thrilling victory over Sri Lanka in the first ODI, Haris Rauf noted that bowling in cold weather conditions can be challenging.

He also shared his frustration, saying that people tend to forget ten good performances and remember just one poor outing, expecting players to deliver consistently in every match.

Rauf added, “People think players are robots. We are not machines; we make mistakes too, but we have confidence in ourselves.”

Earlier, Pakistan secured a narrow 6-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first match of the three-ODI series, gaining a 1-0 lead.

Chasing Pakistan’s target of 300 runs, Sri Lanka managed 293 runs in their allotted 50 overs.

At Pindi Cricket Stadium, Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to field first. Pakistan posted a total of 299 for 5 wickets, thanks to an unbeaten 105-run innings by Salman Agha.
