Israel launches

Beirut: Israel Defense Forces carried out one of its most intense air campaigns on Lebanon despite the ongoing ceasefire with Iran, leaving hundreds dead and injured.

According to Lebanon’s Civil Defense, the death toll has risen to 254, with at least 1,165 people injured in strikes across the country. In the capital Beirut alone, 92 people were killed and 742 wounded, while heavy casualties were also reported in southern suburbs, Baalbek, Hermel, Nabatieh, Aley, Sidon, and Tyre.

The Ministry of Public Health Lebanon said that Wednesday’s attacks alone resulted in 112 deaths and more than 800 injuries, as hospitals declared emergencies and appealed for blood donations.

Eyewitnesses reported continuous explosions across Beirut, with plumes of smoke rising from multiple areas of the city.

The Israel Defense Forces said it targeted over 100 sites linked to Hezbollah, including command centers and military installations in Beirut, the Bekaa Valley, and southern Lebanon, describing it as one of its largest coordinated operations.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the ceasefire with Iran does not apply to Lebanon, while Defense Minister Israel Katz claimed the strikes dealt a major blow to Hezbollah.

Authorities warned that rescue operations are ongoing and the death toll may rise further.

Senior Iranian official Ali Larijani reportedly killed in attack

Senior Iranian official

Tehran : Iranian media has reported that Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, was killed in an alleged attack attributed to the United States and Israel.

According to official Iranian sources, Larijani’s death has been confirmed, with reports also stating that his son, Morteza Larijani, was killed in the same incident.

State affiliated media outlets claim that the attack took place in eastern Tehran, where Larijani had reportedly been visiting his daughter at the time.

A statement shared on Larijani’s official social media account expressed the news in religious terms, saying: “A servant of God has returned to God.” The message further addressed the Iranian people, Muslims worldwide, and “free people of the world,” announcing that “one of God’s servants has been martyred.”

There has been no immediate confirmation or response from U.S. or Israeli officials regarding these claims.

Further details have emerged following reports of the death of Ali Larijani, a senior Iranian official, who was allegedly targeted in a strike claimed by Israel.

Prior to the reported attack, a handwritten message was shared on Larijani’s social media account, paying tribute to those martyred. Iranian sources later confirmed his death, describing it as a significant loss to the country’s leadership.

The Israeli military had earlier claimed responsibility for targeting Larijani at a location in Tehran, stating that Gholam Reza Soleimani, commander of Iran’s Basij internal security force, was also killed in the same strike.

Experts warn that the development could have serious implications for regional stability. Sultan Barakat, Senior Professor of Public Policy at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, said Larijani’s death is likely to make diplomatic efforts to resolve ongoing tensions more difficult and prolonged.

According to Barakat, the incident may strengthen hardline elements within Iran’s political system, pushing the prospect of a negotiated settlement further out of reach.

Biography of Ali Larijani

Ali Larijani was born in Najaf and rose to prominence after joining Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Over the decades, he became one of the most influential figures in Iran’s political, legislative, and foreign policy spheres.

At 67, Larijani was considered a key figure in post-revolution Iranian politics and a member of a powerful religious and political family. He maintained close ties with Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, and was regarded as a trusted advisor on security matters.

Larijani also played a significant role during the Iran–Iraq War and held multiple high-ranking government positions. He served as Speaker of the Iranian Parliament (Majlis) for 12 years and was previously Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator.

Known for his conservative yet relatively pragmatic stance, Larijani remained an influential figure in Iran’s domestic and international policymaking until his reported death.

Israel reopens Rafah Crossing for pedestrians after two years

Israel reopens Rafah

Gaza: Israel has reopened the Rafah Crossing between Gaza and Egypt for pedestrian movement after two years, according to Arab media reports.

Under strict security checks, approximately 150 Palestinians will be allowed to exit Gaza daily, while 50 Palestinians will be permitted entry into Gaza.

An Israeli security official confirmed that European monitoring teams have arrived at the crossing. However, despite the reopening, foreign journalists are still not being allowed entry into Gaza.

It is worth noting that Israel took control of the Rafah Crossing in May 2024 and had since closed it for all movement.

Israel claims killing Hezbollah Chief of Staff Ali Tabbatabai in airstrike

Israel claims

BEIRUT: Israeli forces have claimed responsibility for killing Hezbollah’s Chief of Staff, Ali Tabbatabai, in an airstrike carried out in the Lebanese capital, Beirut.

Israel continues to violate the ceasefire in both Gaza and Lebanon, launching fresh aerial assaults in Beirut. According to Lebanon’s Ministry of Health, the Israeli strike resulted in five fatalities and 28 injuries.

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the target of the operation was Haitham Ali Tabbatabai, also known as Ali Tabbatabai, a senior Hezbollah commander.

Ali Tabbatabai was regarded as the second most important figure in Hezbollah’s hierarchy after Secretary-General Na’im Qassem. The Israeli military confirmed his killing, describing him as a seasoned leader who joined Hezbollah in the 1980s and held several key positions over the decades.

According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), after many Hezbollah leaders were successfully targeted in the ongoing conflict, operational command against Israel had effectively shifted to Tabbatabai.

He was officially appointed Chief of Staff in November 2024 following the end of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah. The IDF claims he had been overseeing the group’s organizational restructuring.

Hezbollah, however, has not yet confirmed whether Haitham Ali Tabbatabai was injured or killed in the attack.

A senior U.S. official stated that Israel did not notify Washington prior to the strike. Another U.S. official noted that the U.S. was aware for several days that Israel intended to intensify operations in Lebanon.

According to international media reports, the U.S. had imposed sanctions on Tabbatabai in 2016 and announced a reward of up to $5 million for information on him.

Pakistan seeks probe into Israel’s war crimes in Gaza

Pakistan

UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has called for accountability over what it described as “grave atrocity crimes” committed by Israel in Gaza, urging an immediate halt to the occupying power’s unlawful actions in the West Bank, including forced displacements, illegal settlements, and annexations.

Speaking in the UN Security Council, Ambassador Usman Jadoon, acting permanent representative of Pakistan to the UN, condemned “the killing of more than 68,000 innocent Palestinians, mostly women and children”, in Gaza, stressing: “The ceasefire, the release of hostages and Palestinian prisoners, and the restoration of humanitarian flows are welcome steps.”

At the same time, he denounced Israel’s continued attacks and aid restrictions. He rejected “the Israeli Knesset’s preliminary approval of draft laws to impose Israeli sovereignty over the occupied West Bank” as blatant violations of international law.

The Pakistani envoy also demanded an end to Israeli illegal actions in the West Bank, including forced displacements, upholding of the legal and historical status of Al-Haram Al-Sharif – Al-Aqsa Mosque, and the unhindered functioning of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

“As reaffirmed by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in its advisory opinion yesterday, Israel is under an obligation to facilitate relief provided by the UN and its entities, particularly UNRWA,” Ambassador Jadoon pointed out.

In addition, he stressed the need for the launch of a credible, time-bound political process consistent with international legitimacy and relevant UN resolutions to establish an independent, sovereign, and contiguous State of Palestine, based on the pre-1967 borders with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.

In his remarks, Ambassador Jadoon also welcomed the peace efforts led by President Donald Trump and commended the crucial role played by the mediators—Egypt, Qatar, Türkiye, and the United States —in facilitating the negotiations.

“We sincerely hope these efforts will yield sustainable results, including a permanent cessation of hostilities and a just, comprehensive and lasting peace.”

“Looking ahead,” the Pakistani envoy said, “the roles of the UN, the Palestinian Authority, and the Palestinian people will be vital to ensuring legitimate governance, reconstruction, and institution-building in Gaza”, along with the Security Council whose role will also be critical for the next phases of the peace plan including for designing and mandating the deployment of an international stabilization force to fulfill its tasks.

Pakistan, he said, will continue to work with all partners to advance these shared objectives and to help restore peace, justice, and dignity to the Palestinian people.

Briefing the 15-member Council, the UN’s Deputy Middle East envoy, Ramiz Alakbarov, said that the Gaza ceasefire provides a rare opportunity to end one of the most destructive phases of the wider Israel-Palestine conflict.

Alakbarov warned that without decisive support for reconstruction and aid delivery, the region risks sliding back into violence.
