Former Indian cricketer and Umpire clear Usman Tariq’s bowling action

Former Indian cricketer

Ahead of the highly anticipated Pakistan vs India T20 World Cup match, concerns over Pakistani spinner Usman Tariq’s bowling action have been addressed by former Indian cricketer Anil Choudhary, following earlier clarification by Ravichandran Ashwin.

Usman Tariq, whose bowling style differs slightly from traditional spinners, has been under scrutiny on social media and mainstream media in India, with critics questioning his pause during delivery. However, the ICC has fully cleared his action, and he successfully bowled against the USA earlier in the tournament.

Speaking on an Indian digital show, umpire Anil Choudhary confirmed that Usman Tariq’s bowling action is legitimate. He noted that Tariq pauses during every delivery as part of his routine action, making it completely legal under ICC regulations.

Choudhary explained that problems would arise only if Tariq deviates from his routine action and bowls without the usual pause, as such changes could be challenged by the batter.

He cited previous instances where players like Andre Russell faced scrutiny when they altered their usual actions mid-game.

When asked whether a batter could raise a complaint if Usman pauses excessively, Choudhary clarified that umpires would assess the situation according to the bowler’s routine.

If no significant change is observed, the action remains legal; otherwise, the batter may approach the umpire. In cases where a batter refuses to play without valid reason, the umpire can issue a time-wasting warning.

Earlier, Ashwin had also stated that the legality of a bowling action is determined only through ICC testing centers, and according to ICC rules, a 15-degree elbow flexion is allowed. Pauses during delivery, he added, are fully compliant with these regulations.

This clarification comes at a crucial time as Pakistan prepares to face India, easing concerns about Usman Tariq’s participation and effectiveness in the high-stakes clash.

UAE grants Pakistan a two-month extension on loan repayment

UAE grants Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has, in principle, agreed to extend (roll over) Pakistan’s $2 billion deposit for a short period of two months.

A senior official confirmed that the UAE has consented to roll over the amount until April 17, 2026. The assurance was given following recent contacts between Ishaq Dar, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, and senior UAE officials.

According to sources, the short-term extension carries an interest rate of 6.5 percent, with formal approval from relevant authorities expected imminently.

The move is being seen as significant ahead of the third review talks between Pakistan and the IMF, particularly as the previous one-month extension was due to expire in just four days. Islamabad has informed the UAE that it will seek a longer-term rollover after concluding negotiations with the IMF.

Earlier in January, the UAE had granted a one-month extension on the deposit, with the third installment of $1 billion scheduled for July 2026.

Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Hussain Andarabi stated that Ishaq Dar is personally overseeing the matter and is actively coordinating with UAE authorities to ensure a smooth process.

He added that determining the rollover period is at the discretion of the lender, and thanks to the Deputy Prime Minister’s efforts, the rollover has been secured.

The spokesperson also clarified that he was not aware of statements made by Finance Ministry officials in the Standing Committee on Finance, and referenced the Finance Minister’s remarks that Pakistan’s external financial profile remains intact and IMF-related matters are progressing in the right direction.

Imran Khan to be transferred from Adiala to Islamabad Jail

Imran Khan

ISLAMABAD: The government has decided to transfer Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister and PTI founder, from Adiala Jail to Islamabad Jail, officials confirmed.

Mohsin Naqvi stated that since Imran Khan’s sentence was handed down by an Islamabad court, he will now serve his term at the Islamabad facility.

Speaking at a passing-out ceremony of Islamabad police officers, Naqvi highlighted the importance of a well-trained federal police force.

He said that previously, the force lacked a dedicated counter-terrorism unit. “We started the training three months ago, which is a six-month course, but our officers completed it in just three months with day-and-night efforts,” he said, praising the trainers and officers involved.

He added that Islamabad’s training schools are being upgraded, and personnel from other regions will also be able to receive training there. “Having this force is very important. I am confident that these young officers will courageously tackle terrorist threats,” he said.

Regarding Imran Khan, Naqvi clarified that once Islamabad Jail is fully operational, Khan will be moved there. He noted that the facility will be ready within two months and is equipped with all necessary medical services. Since Khan’s conviction was issued by an Islamabad court, his transfer to Islamabad Jail has been deemed appropriate.
