Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari has said that Pakistan has emerged as a symbol of balance and stability in the region due to the efforts of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, in a message marking the first anniversary of Marka-e-Haq.

In an official statement issued by the Aiwan-e-Sadr, the president paid tribute to the nation and the armed forces, praising the leadership, strategy, and decisive actions of Field Marshal Asim Munir, which he said played a key role in the success of the operation.

He also commended Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu, appreciating the exceptional professionalism and operational excellence of the Pakistan Air Force, while acknowledging the Pakistan Navy under Admiral Naveed Ashraf for its readiness and strong defence capabilities.

President Zardari said Pakistan is a responsible and peace-loving state that has demonstrated its defensive strength to the world through a firm yet measured response to aggression.

He reiterated that the issue of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir must be resolved in accordance with United Nations resolutions, adding that Pakistan will continue to extend moral, political, and diplomatic support to the Kashmiri people.

He further described India’s alleged suspension efforts regarding the Indus Waters Treaty as “water aggression,” stressing that water remains a vital lifeline for millions of Pakistanis.

The president also urged Afghanistan to ensure its territory is not used for terrorism against Pakistan or other regional countries, calling the elimination of externally backed terrorism essential for regional peace.

He noted that Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts for the peaceful resolution of the Iran–US tensions have been widely appreciated at the international level.

Concluding his message, President Zardari reaffirmed that the people of Pakistan and the armed forces remain fully prepared to defend the country and respond to all challenges.

Marka-e-Haq is day of gratitude, national resolve, says PM Shehbaz

Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that Marka-e-Haq is a day to offer gratitude to Almighty Allah for His countless blessings and favors, as the nation marks one year since the military operation.

In his message, the prime minister said the day serves as a reminder of the determination, courage and steadfastness demonstrated by Pakistan during a critical moment, adding that the country inflicted a decisive defeat on its adversary.

He paid tribute to the martyrs, their families and the veterans who stood like a “wall of steel” in defense of the homeland.

Prime Minister Shehbaz said the coordinated and synchronized response of Pakistan’s armed forces across land, sea, air and cyber domains established the country as an unconquerable force.

He said Marka-e-Haq stands as clear evidence that the Pakistani nation is peace-loving, yet brave, dignified and resolute, and cannot be intimidated or forced to bow before aggression.

The prime minister said the operation has become a historic milestone in which Pakistan gained a decisive advantage in response to what he described as unprovoked aggression, shattering the enemy’s perception of invincibility.

He praised Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir for his courageous leadership, and also commended Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu and Admiral Naveed Ashraf for their strategic direction.

Prime Minister Shehbaz saluted the officers and personnel of Pakistan’s armed forces, saying their professionalism and the unwavering support of the nation opened a new chapter in Pakistan’s strategic history.

He said Pakistan has reaffirmed its commitment to peace while restoring strategic balance and fully safeguarding its security, sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The prime minister warned that any attempt to weaken Pakistan or launch aggression against the country would be met with an immediate, effective and comprehensive response.

He also reiterated Pakistan’s determination to eliminate terrorism and continue efforts to bring all militant threats to their logical conclusion.

On the issue of Kashmir, Prime Minister Shehbaz said sustainable strategic stability in South Asia is not possible without a resolution of the dispute in accordance with United Nations resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

He reaffirmed Pakistan’s continued support for the Kashmiri people’s right to freedom and self-determination.

The prime minister said Pakistan is increasingly recognized as a responsible state that possesses strong defensive capabilities and is playing an important role in promoting global peace and stability.

He noted that Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts and role in facilitating dialogue between the United States and Iran have been widely appreciated by the international community.

Concluding his message, Prime Minister Shehbaz called on the nation to renew its pledge to honor the sacrifices of the martyrs and continue working selflessly for the strength, dignity and prosperity of Pakistan.

PSX gains nearly 5% in weekly trade as KSE-100 surges over 8,100 points

Karachi: The benchmark Pakistan Stock Exchange witnessed a strong performance during the outgoing trading week, with the KSE-100 Index rising by 4.98 percent and adding 8,121 points.

The index closed at 171,115 points, up from 162,994 points recorded at the end of the previous week.

During the week, the market successfully regained nine psychological levels, reflecting renewed investor confidence and sustained buying interest.

Out of the five trading sessions, the market remained bullish for four days, while one session ended in the red.

The KSE-100 Index touched an intraday high of 173,274 points during the week, while the lowest level recorded was 162,532 points.

Market capitalization increased by Rs880 billion over the five trading days, taking the total market capitalization to Rs18.903 trillion.

Trading activity also remained robust, with investors exchanging 4.36 billion shares worth Rs210 billion during the week.

US-Iran talks likely to start in Islamabad next week: report

Islamabad: Negotiations between the United States and Iran are expected to resume in Islamabad next week, according to a report published by The Wall Street Journal.

Citing sources familiar with the matter, the newspaper reported that both sides are working with mediators to finalize a 14-point memorandum of understanding (MoU).

The one-page document is intended to establish a one-month framework for negotiations aimed at paving the way for an end to the ongoing conflict.

According to the report, the draft covers key issues including Iran’s nuclear programme, efforts to reduce tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, and the possible transfer of Iran’s highly enriched uranium stockpiles to a third country.

However, several major issues remain unresolved.

The report said the scope and extent of sanctions relief continue to be a central point of disagreement and could pose a significant obstacle to reaching an agreement.

The Wall Street Journal added that if substantial progress is made, both parties may agree to extend the initial one-month negotiation period.

The first round of talks between the United States and Iran was held in Islamabad on April 11, where delegations from both countries engaged in approximately 21 hours of discussions.

The meeting concluded without a formal agreement, but officials described the dialogue as an important step toward continued diplomatic engagement.

Mexico faces backlash over early school year end ahead of FIFA World Cup

Mexico City: Mexican authorities have announced that the academic year will end more than a month early as the country prepares to host matches of the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026, a decision that has sparked widespread criticism from parents, educators, and policy experts.

Education Secretary Mario Delgado said the school year would conclude on June 5, approximately 40 days earlier than scheduled, citing both extreme weather conditions and logistical preparations for the global football tournament.

“We’re going to end the school year on June 5 because many states are already experiencing high temperatures, and there is also the issue of the World Cup,” Delgado said during an event in the northern state of Sonora.

He added that authorities are also considering advancing the start of the next academic year, currently set for August 31, to adjust the national education calendar around the tournament.

The FIFA World Cup 2026, jointly hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada, is scheduled to begin on June 11, with Mexico’s opening match against South Africa set to take place in Mexico City.

However, the announcement quickly triggered controversy. President Claudia Sheinbaum clarified that the proposal was not yet final.

“There is no definitive calendar yet,” she said at her daily press briefing. “It is important that children do not lose learning time.”

The decision has raised concerns among parents, many of whom now face additional childcare costs during an extended summer break.

Public policy think tank Mexico Evalua warned that the move could negatively impact more than 23 million students, further deepening educational inequalities and reducing already limited learning time.

Business groups also criticized the plan. The Coparmex employers’ association described it as “hasty,” warning of disruptions to family routines and potential effects on workforce productivity.

In a significant pushback, officials in the western state of Jalisco—governed by opposition authorities—announced they would not implement the early closure. Schools there will remain open until June 30 as originally scheduled, except for brief suspensions during World Cup matches hosted in Guadalajara to accommodate logistical arrangements.

Iran to play in World Cup 2026, seeks guarantees from hosts

TEHRAN: Iran national football team has confirmed that it will participate in the FIFA World Cup 2026, while urging host nations the United States, Canada, and Mexico to address its security and logistical concerns.

According to the Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran, regional tensions and recent political developments had raised uncertainty over the team’s participation.

However, the federation said a final decision has been made and Iran will compete in the tournament.

Federation President Mehdi Taj said Iran has presented 10 conditions to the host countries. These include the uninterrupted issuance of visas for players and officials, respect for Iran’s national flag and anthem, and comprehensive security arrangements for the team.

Iran has also sought assurances that players who may face additional scrutiny due to past affiliations will not encounter visa-related obstacles.

Earlier, FIFA President Gianni Infantino stated that Iran’s matches in the United States would proceed as scheduled.

Iran has been drawn in Group G alongside New Zealand national football team, Belgium national football team, and Egypt national football team. The team is set to play its opening match on June 15 in Los Angeles.

Pakistan reach 179-1 at stumps, trail Bangladesh by 234 runs

DHAKA Pakistan national cricket team ended the second day of the first Test against Bangladesh national cricket team on 179 for 1, needing another 234 runs to erase the hosts’ first-innings lead.

Pakistan made a cautious start to their innings after bowling Bangladesh out for 413.

Azaan Awais remained unbeaten on 85, while Abdullah Fazal was not out on 37 at the close of play. The only wicket to fall was that of Imam-ul-Haq, who scored 45 before being dismissed by Mehidy Hasan Miraz.
