PM Shehbaz chairs meeting to finalize strategy for boosting Pakistan’s exports

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a high-level meeting to review a policy framework aimed at increasing Pakistan’s exports, with participants presenting recommendations and suggestions to strengthen the country’s export sector.

During the meeting, the prime minister emphasized that export-oriented industries are essential for achieving Pakistan’s long-term economic development goals.

He said the government is focused on expanding exports and providing greater facilitation to industries, directing officials to formulate a comprehensive plan to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and industrial units to enhance export performance.

Prime Minister Shehbaz also called for a strategy to promote new businesses and industries that can contribute to higher exports and diversify Pakistan’s export base.

He stressed that investment in research and development (R&D) and innovation within the industrial and commercial sectors would improve Pakistan’s competitiveness in global markets.

Separately, members of the Senate of Pakistan discussed the economic impact of recent regional tensions and measures needed to reduce government expenditures and stabilize the economy.

Senator Mohsin Aziz said Pakistan’s exports had declined by $4 billion, adding that citizens currently hold Rs 38 trillion in bank deposits, with Rs 18 trillion shifted from businesses into banks.

He further noted that electricity and gas prices have doubled, while circular debt continues to rise despite the increase in utility tariffs.

Sindh announces vacations for schools from June 1 to July 31

KARACHI: Sindh Government has announced summer vacations for all public and private schools across the province.

According to the Sindh Education Department, the summer break will begin on June 1 and continue until July 31. The decision will apply to all government and private educational institutions in Sindh.

Meanwhile, the Government of Punjab has also declared extended summer holidays for schools across the province.

Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat said that summer vacations in Punjab will start on May 22 and schools will reopen on August 24.

The announcements come as temperatures continue to rise across the country, prompting provincial governments to take precautionary measures to protect students and school staff from extreme heat.

In an official statement issued by the Aiwan-e-Sadr, the president paid tribute to the nation and the armed forces, praising the leadership, strategy, and decisive actions of Field Marshal Asim Munir, which he said played a key role in the success of the operation.

He also commended Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu, appreciating the exceptional professionalism and operational excellence of the Pakistan Air Force, while acknowledging the Pakistan Navy under Admiral Naveed Ashraf for its readiness and strong defence capabilities.

President Zardari said Pakistan is a responsible and peace-loving state that has demonstrated its defensive strength to the world through a firm yet measured response to aggression.

In his message, the prime minister said the day serves as a reminder of the determination, courage and steadfastness demonstrated by Pakistan during a critical moment, adding that the country inflicted a decisive defeat on its adversary.

He paid tribute to the martyrs, their families and the veterans who stood like a “wall of steel” in defense of the homeland.

Prime Minister Shehbaz said the coordinated and synchronized response of Pakistan’s armed forces across land, sea, air and cyber domains established the country as an unconquerable force.

PM task force proposes screening for deported passengers to curb HIV spread

ISLAMABAD: A high-level task force formed by the Prime Minister to address the rising number of HIV cases has proposed mandatory screening of deported passengers at airports and entry points as part of broader preventive measures.

According to the Ministry of Health spokesperson, the task force held its second meeting under the chairmanship of Dr. Mukhtar Bharath following the Prime Minister’s notice of recently reported HIV cases.

The meeting was attended by senior health officials, representatives of federal and provincial institutions, and public health experts, including Dr. Zafar Mirza and retired Major General Azhar Mahmood Kiani, chairman of the task force.

Officials from the National Institute of Health (NIH), Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan, provincial health departments, UNAIDS, and the Common Management Unit also participated in the session.

Dr. Mukhtar Bharath said the task force was established to investigate the causes behind the spread of HIV, identify responsible factors, and formulate recommendations to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The task force recommended activating a real-time national dashboard linking NIH, CDC, and CMU data systems to improve monitoring of HIV cases, trend analysis, and coordination mechanisms.

Participants also agreed on the need for a National Public Health Law aimed at preventing the spread of HIV through unsafe medical practices, particularly the reuse of contaminated syringes.

The task force stressed stricter enforcement against the reuse and mislabeling of syringes and IV sets, regular inspections of hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, and medical stores, and stronger regulatory oversight by healthcare commissions nationwide.

Among key recommendations were mandatory HIV testing during screening processes, compulsory pre-surgery HIV tests in hospitals, and enhanced infection prevention and control measures across the country.

The panel also proposed ensuring timely availability of essential medical supplies to prevent syringe reuse and expanding testing, treatment, and preventive facilities in high-risk areas and vulnerable groups.

The task force further recommended adding HIV to the list of notifiable diseases and launching a nationwide awareness campaign regarding blood-borne infections and safe medical practices.

In addition, it was proposed that Border Health Services ensure screening of deported individuals at airports and other entry points to strengthen disease surveillance and public health protection.

Heatwave in Karachi: Eight dead as temperatures hit year’s highest level

At least eight people lost their lives in Karachi on Monday, rescue officials confirmed, with some of the deaths linked to the ongoing intense heatwave affecting the city.

According to rescue authorities, four bodies were recovered from different areas, while four individuals died after being shifted to hospitals in critical condition.

The deceased were reported from Manghopir, Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Boat Basin, and the Suparco Road area.

The other victims were brought from Liaquatabad, Jamali Bridge, Surjani Town, and Defence Phase 8, where their condition had deteriorated before they could survive.

Officials stated that some of the deceased were drug users, while others were suspected to have died due to severe heat exposure amid extreme weather conditions.

The incidents occurred as Karachi continues to experience a sharp rise in temperature and persistently hot and dry weather.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department reported that Monday marked the hottest day of the year in the city, with temperatures reaching 44.1°C.

The Met Office forecast that hot and humid conditions will continue on Tuesday, with temperatures expected around 39°C. It added that while sea breezes may persist, high humidity will intensify the “feels-like” temperature.

Medical experts have advised citizens to limit outdoor movement during peak hours, particularly between 11am and 3pm, stay hydrated, and take precautionary measures to avoid heat-related illnesses. They also recommended avoiding street food, drinking boiled water, and maintaining hygiene to prevent gastrointestinal diseases.

Residents have further been urged to wear light-colored, loose clothing and cover their heads when stepping outdoors as the heatwave continues to intensify.

Pakistan reviews security arrangements of refineries and oil storage

ISLAMABAD: A high-level meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar reviewed security arrangements for refineries and oil storage installations across the country.

According to an official statement, the meeting was attended by the Minister for IT, Minister of State for Finance, secretaries of petroleum and interior, along with senior government officials.

During the briefing, participants were informed that security measures are being strengthened in coordination with all relevant stakeholders and oil marketing companies.

It was noted that the additional cost of enhanced security arrangements will be borne by the oil marketing companies.

The Deputy Prime Minister expressed satisfaction over the existing security framework during the meeting.

The government reiterated its commitment to ensuring the protection of critical energy infrastructure and maintaining an uninterrupted supply of fuel across the country.

The meeting also reviewed the national stock position of petroleum, oil, and lubricants. The Ministry of Petroleum briefed the participants on fuel reserves, stating that sufficient stocks are available to ensure uninterrupted supply of petroleum products across the country until the third week of June 2026.

It was further informed that the supply situation is being monitored on a daily basis through the National Coordination and Management Committee, ensuring effective oversight and proactive supply chain management.

Saudi Arabia reverses Hajj age restriction

ISLAMABAD: Saudi Arabia has withdrawn its earlier decision to impose a minimum age limit of 15 years for Hajj pilgrims, restoring the previous policy that allows children aged 12 and above to perform the pilgrimage.

According to a statement issued by the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority, the restriction on pilgrims under 15 years has been lifted, and previously rejected visas under the short-lived policy will now be reprocessed.

The PCAA confirmed that the earlier eligibility criteria have been reinstated, under which children aged 12 or above can travel for Hajj.

A spokesperson for Pakistan’s Ministry of Religious Affairs also verified that the Saudi government has taken back its decision regarding the age restriction.

 The Pakistan Hajj Mission has issued a notification in line with the updated Saudi directives.

As per the revised instructions, pilgrims aged 12 and above will now be allowed to travel to Saudi Arabia, maintaining the earlier policy framework.

It is worth noting that only hours earlier, authorities had announced a ban on children under 15 from traveling for Hajj, effective May 3, 2026, with visas of underage pilgrims declared invalid. However, the decision was swiftly reversed, bringing relief to affected families.
