President, PM stress renewal of national pledge to Iqbal’s vision

President

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called for reaffirming the nation’s dedication to Allama Muhammad Iqbal’s guiding principles, urging the people to draw inspiration from his vision for a prosperous future.

In a message on the birth anniversary of Allama Iqbal being observed on November 9, President  said that as they paid tribute to his remarkable personality, they renewed their commitment to his principles and to striving for a Pakistan ‘that is prosperous, peaceful and united. Let us draw strength from his life and ideals as we work together to build a brighter tomorrow.’

Today, he said they marked the birth anniversary of Allama Muhammad Iqbal, the poet-philosopher whose vision helped awaken the spirit of independence and self-determination among the Muslims of the Subcontinent.

In his address at the All-India Muslim League session in 1930, he emphasized the importance of securing the rights of Muslims which laid the foundation for a sovereign nation, he added.

“Iqbal’s legacy goes well beyond his literary works such as Asrar-e-Khudi, Rumuz-e-Bekhudi and Bang-e-Dara, which explore matters of identity, spirituality and freedom. His insistence on political representation for Muslims and on values rooted in Islam has left a lasting imprint on Pakistan’s national identity,” President Secretariat Press Wing, in a press release, quoted the president as saying.

The president prayed that Allama Iqbal’s vision might guide them in their shared endeavour for progress, and may his legacy continue to inspire generations.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif said that in the light of thought of Allama Muhammad Iqbal, the government of Pakistan was committed to provide such an education for the young generation that was not only a source of livelihood but also improved intellect and character.

In a message on Iqbal Day celebrated on November 9, he said, “Today, on the birth anniversary of the Poet of the East, thinker of Islam and architect of Pakistan, Allama Iqbal, we pay tribute to his thoughts and insights and his extraordinary role for the Islamic nation and the Muslims of the subcontinent.”

“Allama Iqbal is the name of such a spiritual and intellectual force that lit a candle of light in the darkness of slavery, and gave a message of self-reliance to a nation that was in despair,” he added.

The prime minister said, “Allama Iqbal taught the lesson that faith, knowledge and action are the pillars on which a living nation builds itself. Even today, Iqbal’s thought provides guidance in national and global situations.”

“Iqbal’s youth is the architect of the nation and the falcon of the future,” he remarked.

He said, “The ideological formation of our education in the light of Iqbal’s thought is our need as on it our bright and strong future depends.”

“Allama Iqbal’s dream was that the youth should write their own destiny and create a new world with their own imagination. To give practical form to this thought, the government has started several programmes including Uraan Pakistan to provide modern education, skills, and employment opportunities for the youth.”

The prime minister said, “Iqbal was an Islamic thinker and Iqbal’s dream was the unity of the Islamic world and the establishment of peace in the world. He saw the Muslim Ummah as one body. Today, the world needs this message of Iqbal so that there is brotherhood instead of sectarianism, love instead of hatred, and justice instead of use of might.”

“Iqbal’s thoughts are a guide for national policy, educational priorities, and individual and collective life. We have to make Iqbal’s thoughts the focal point of our actions so that Pakistan can truly become the Pakistan of Iqbal’s dreams, where knowledge and action, love and tolerance, and peace and justice prevail,” he continued.

He said, “Pakistan will continue to play its constructive role in promoting the unity of the Muslim Ummah and world peace in the light of Iqbal’s thoughts. Long live Pakistan!”

PM calls cabinet session on 27th Constitutional Amendment

PM calls

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called a federal cabinet session for 10am today to review and approve the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment, officials said.

According to insiders, the prime minister will chair the meeting via video link from Baku. The government has reportedly accepted the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) proposals regarding the constitutional changes.

Sources say the federal cabinet is expected to approve the draft of the 27th Constitutional Amendment during the session.

Meanwhile, the opposition has already rejected the draft. After a joint meeting, opposition parties in the Senate said that the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), the PPP, and their allied partners are “bulldozing legislation,” adding that the constitutional amendment draft is being kept hidden from them.

Earlier, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari briefed the media following a meeting of the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC), saying the committee agreed on three key points of the proposed amendment.

Bilawal said the PPP will support amendments to Article 243 and favours the establishment of constitutional courts. He added that issues related to the Charter of Democracy must also be revisited.

Bilawal further stated that, under the NFC Award, provincial funds can increase but not be reduced. He stressed that the unfinished agenda of the Charter of Democracy must be discussed, and the party will see whether consensus can be developed on other clauses during the process of the 27th Amendment.

PPP rejects all 27th Amendment proposals except Article 243 change

PPP rejects

KARACHI: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has taken a firm stance on the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment, with its Central Executive Committee (CEC) endorsing only one clause while discarding the rest after extensive deliberations.

Speaking at a press briefing after the meeting, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said a delegation from the PML-N had approached the party seeking support for the amendment.

The proposed changes included the creation of a constitutional court, revisions to the NFC Award, reforms in education and population planning, restoration of executive magistracy, judicial transfers, and matters related to the Election Commission.

Bilawal stated that the only proposal the CEC agreed to support was the amendment pertaining to Article 243. He said the party outrightly rejected any move affecting the provincial share, adding that the PPP would not support such a proposal under any circumstances. All other points of the 27th Amendment, including changes to the NFC formula, were fully rejected.

Regarding the establishment of a constitutional court, Bilawal noted that while the idea existed in the Charter of Democracy, other commitments from the charter must also be considered. He emphasized that any such court must ensure equal representation from all four provinces.

Bilawal further said the CEC would reconvene after Friday prayers to finalize its position on the matter of the constitutional court.

Meanwhile, federal cabinet meeting, convened today under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to deliberate on the 27th Constitutional Amendment, has been postponed.

The session was expected to approve the draft of the 27th Amendment; however, cabinet members have been formally notified about the postponement.

The meeting was scheduled to take place at Committee Room No. 2 of the Parliament House, where key government matters and proposed constitutional amendments were to be discussed.
