Studies link smartphone boom to declining birth rates globally

Studies link

WASHINGTON: The rapid rise of smartphones may be contributing to falling birth rates around the world, according to two new studies that examined fertility trends in the United States and dozens of other countries.

Research by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that the U.S. birth rate has declined by 22% since 2007, the same year the first Apple iPhone was introduced.

For years, experts largely attributed the decline in births to the 2008 global financial crisis, which left millions facing economic hardship. However, birth rates failed to return to previous levels even after economic conditions improved.

Researchers noted that several factors have contributed to the trend, including greater use of contraception, higher levels of female education and rising housing and childcare costs.

The study sought to determine whether the widespread adoption of smartphones after 2007 also played a role in the decline.

Until 2011, iPhones were available through only one U.S. mobile network, creating regional differences in smartphone access. The researchers found that areas with earlier access to the devices experienced a 4.5% to 8% decline in birth rates among women aged 15 to 24, while the impact on women older than 24 was more limited.

The researchers cautioned that smartphones alone cannot explain the decline in fertility. However, they suggested that increased smartphone use may have reduced face-to-face social interaction, potentially affecting relationship formation and family planning decisions.

A separate study by University of Cincinnati identified a similar pattern on a global scale.

The researchers analyzed smartphone adoption rates and youth fertility trends across 128 countries and found that birth rates tended to fall more rapidly after smartphones became widely available.

They described the phenomenon as a “common global technology shock” affecting both developed and developing nations.

The studies noted that declining birth rates have contributed to aging populations, shrinking workforces and growing pressure on social security systems in many countries around the world.

ChatGPT sets global record as it crosses 1 billion users

ChatGPT sets

WASHINGTON: Artificial intelligence-powered chatbot ChatGPT has set a global record for rapid user growth, reaching 1 billion users worldwide within just three years of its launch, according to reports.

Since its introduction in November 2022, ChatGPT has been used by hundreds of millions of users globally, driving a surge in demand for artificial intelligence-based tools and prompting major technology companies to accelerate development in the AI sector.

The milestone makes ChatGPT one of the fastest-growing digital platforms in history, surpassing major social media applications in the speed of user adoption.

By comparison, TikTok took 5.1 years to reach 1 billion users, Instagram required 7.7 years, YouTube reached the milestone in 8.1 years, and Facebook took 8.7 years.

According to a Reuters report, ChatGPT reached the 1 billion-user mark in May 2026.

Data from Sensor Tower indicates that rival AI chatbot Claude is also gaining traction, with around 56 million monthly active users. However, ChatGPT continues to dominate the AI chatbot market, with strong year-on-year growth.

The development underscores the growing role of artificial intelligence tools in reshaping global technology trends and digital communication.

Ferrari launches first fully electric vehicle ‘Luce’

Ferrari launches

ROME: Luxury sports car maker Ferrari has unveiled its first fully electric vehicle, the “Luce,” marking a major shift for the brand as global automakers reassess their electric vehicle strategies amid weakening demand.

The company said the new model, whose name means “light” in Italian, comes at a time when several rivals are re-evaluating their EV plans due to slowing market demand.

The four-door “Luce” is being described as Ferrari’s first five-seater in its history. Its design reportedly involves collaboration with Jony Ive and his creative firm LoveFrom.

Unlike Ferrari’s traditional sports car styling, the Luce features a more spacious, glass-heavy design. Its interior combines leather, glass and anodized aluminum, while retaining physical buttons alongside digital controls instead of a fully touchscreen-based system.

Performance-wise, the vehicle includes four electric motors—one for each wheel—producing more than 1,000 horsepower combined. The company says it can exceed speeds of 310 km/h and travel over 500 kilometers on a single charge.

Despite being fully electric, Ferrari has incorporated systems to simulate engine-like vibrations and driving feedback inside the cabin to preserve its traditional driving feel.

The luxury EV offers 600 liters of boot space and advanced technology features. It is priced at approximately 550,000 euros ($640,000).

Ferrari Chief Executive Officer Benedetto Vigna said the project represents five years of development work, with deliveries expected to begin in the final quarter of 2026.

According to her, the idea of building a stable life with someone who valued children and could provide financial security played a significant role in her thinking.

St. Clair said that raising children as a single mother had been extremely difficult, and financial stability became a key factor in her personal choices.

She first publicly claimed in February last year on the social media platform X that Musk was the father of her child. She said the relationship between them was emotionally close before her pregnancy, but their dynamic changed afterward.

She also said she kept the birth of her child private for about five months to protect the child’s privacy and security. Later, in a podcast, she alleged that financial support from Musk gradually decreased over time.

St. Clair claimed that initial monthly support was around $100,000, which was later reduced to $40,000 and then $20,000.

The report notes that St. Clair and Musk first met during an interview in May 2023. Musk, who is frequently in the news due to having 14 children with different women, has not publicly responded in detail to these specific claims.

Google Chrome 148 to introduce faster browsing

Google Chrome

Google is set to roll out a significant update to its Chrome web browser. According to reports, Chrome version 148 is expected to be released in mid-April, promising faster and more efficient browsing for users.

One of the key features being tested in this update is lazy loading for videos and audio. Lazy loading is a technology that delays the loading of non-essential or off-screen resources until they are needed. This improves page load performance and reduces bandwidth usage.

Currently, Chrome supports lazy loading for images, which means that images on a webpage load only when they come into view, rather than loading all at once.

The upcoming extension to videos and audio will ensure that these media files load only when required, helping pages load more quickly.

The update will be available across Chrome’s desktop version as well as Android and iOS devices, providing a smoother and more responsive browsing experience across platforms.

Amazon eyes smartphone comeback with transformer over decade after fire phone failure

Amazon eyes smartphone

Seattle: Amazon is planning a return to the smartphone market more than ten years after the disastrous launch of its Fire Phone.

The original Fire Phone, introduced in 2014 under the direct supervision of founder Jeff Bezos, was meant to challenge Apple and Samsung but was discontinued after just over a year, becoming one of Amazon’s most high-profile flops.

The new device, internally codenamed “Transformer,” is being developed within Amazon’s devices and services unit, according to sources familiar with the project.

The phone is envisioned as a highly personalized mobile device that integrates seamlessly with Alexa and serves as a daily conduit for Amazon’s customers.

The Transformer aims to make shopping on Amazon, streaming Prime Video, listening to Prime Music, and ordering food from partner services easier than ever.

Artificial intelligence features may eliminate the need for traditional app stores, streamlining access to content and services.

This initiative reflects Bezos’ long-term vision of a ubiquitous, voice-driven computing assistant, similar to the AI in science fiction series like Star Trek. While Alexa is expected to play a central role, it may not serve as the phone’s primary operating system.

Amazon faces the challenge of competing against entrenched leaders Apple and Samsung, which together captured about 40% of global smartphone sales last year, according to Counterpoint Research. Compounding the challenge, global smartphone shipments are forecast to decline 13% in 2026 due to rising memory chip prices, according to the International Data Corporation.

The company hopes to avoid past pitfalls of the Fire Phone, which suffered from a proprietary operating system lacking popular apps, battery-draining 3D display technology, and weak consumer adoption despite a free Amazon Prime trial. Amazon had ultimately canceled the Fire Phone after 14 months, taking a $170 million charge for unsold inventory.

With the Transformer, Amazon aims to combine AI, personalized shopping, and entertainment into a single device to make a stronger mark in the smartphone market.

Despite Ban, Many Australian teens under 16 continue using social media

Despite Ban

A significant number of Australian teenagers under the age of 16 continued using social media platforms even two months after the country introduced a ban restricting access for minors, according to new industry data, raising concerns about the effectiveness of age-verification systems.

A report by parental control software company Qustodio revealed that more than one-fifth of teenagers aged 13 to 15 were still active on popular platforms such as TikTok and Snapchat between December and February, despite the restrictions.

The findings provide some of the earliest insights into how young users’ online behaviour has changed since Australia implemented the social media ban in December. The policy has drawn global attention, with several governments considering similar measures to protect minors online.

According to the report, the number of teenagers aged 13–15 using Snapchat dropped by 13.8 percentage points from November to February, bringing the total to about 20.3%. Usage of TikTok among the same age group also declined by 5.7 percentage points, falling to 21.2%.

Meanwhile, usage of YouTube among teenagers dipped slightly by one percentage point to 36.9%, although the data did not confirm whether these users were logged into accounts. The Australian law still allows people of all ages to access YouTube without logging in.

Under the new regulations, major platforms including Meta’s Instagram, Facebook, and Threads, along with TikTok, Snapchat, and YouTube, must block users under the age of 16 or face fines of up to A$49.5 million (about $35 million).

A spokesperson for Australia’s internet regulator, the eSafety Commissioner, said authorities were aware that some minors were still able to access social media and were actively working with platforms and age-verification providers to monitor compliance and address potential violations of the law.

The office said it was reviewing multiple data sources and insights to assess whether companies are properly enforcing the restrictions.

A spokesperson for Communications Minister Anika Wells acknowledged that raising the minimum age for social media access represents a cultural shift that will take time to fully implement.

The data also suggested that social media use among teenagers typically declines during December and January due to Australia’s long summer school holidays. However, the sharper drop compared to the previous year indicates the ban may have had some effect.

Despite earlier concerns, the report found little evidence that teenagers were shifting to unregulated platforms. However, usage of WhatsApp among 13- to 15-year-olds showed a slight increase during the same period
