WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump is considering making a formal announcement declaring an end to the war with Iran, according to U.S. media reports.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump is seeking to maintain pressure on Iran by prioritizing economic sanctions. At the same time, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has extended the deployment period of American forces in the Middle East to preserve military capabilities in case of an emergency, the report said.

The report said Trump’s administration is also facing growing political pressure ahead of the U.S. midterm elections, with Democrats potentially gaining an advantage. Negative public sentiment toward the war is also contributing to the pressure on the administration.

Despite the political pressure, U.S. warships and defense systems remain deployed across the region. The prolonged travel and combat deployments are placing significant strain on American service members, according to the report.

The developments come as the Trump administration weighs how to maintain pressure on Iran while addressing growing domestic opposition to the conflict.

WASHINGTON: The Pentagon has signed a $22.9 billion agreement with a defense contractor to produce and supply Tomahawk cruise missiles, as the United States seeks to replenish weapons stocks following its conflict with Iran, according to media reports.

US defense officials said the contract is aimed at accelerating the delivery of Tomahawk missiles to the American military and strengthening its stockpile.

The acting secretary of the US Navy said providing troops with the weapons they need to deter aggression and defend the country remained a top priority.

Tomahawk missiles are primarily launched from submarines and warships and are designed to strike targets at distances of more than 1,000 miles, or about 1,600 kilometers.

The deal comes amid reports of concerns over U.S. weapons inventories following the conflict with Iran and efforts by the Pentagon to replenish key missile supplies.
