How much will Apple pay New CEO John Ternus each year?

John Ternus has officially taken over as Apple’s chief executive, ending Tim Cook’s 15-year tenure as CEO. Cook will now serve as the company’s executive chairman.

Ternus assumed the CEO role on Sept. 1. While his base salary is relatively modest compared with the potential value of his compensation package, his performance-based awards could be worth tens of millions of dollars.

According to a report, Ternus will receive an annual salary of $3 million, along with $2.5 million in prorated restricted stock units.

Documents filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission show that Ternus could receive up to $55 million from Apple based largely on the company’s stock performance and financial growth.

The potential award will primarily be provided in Apple shares, with the final value depending on how strongly the company’s revenue and performance grow.

Meanwhile, Cook will receive an annual salary of $2 million as executive chairman, along with an equity award valued at $45 million.

Half of Cook’s $45 million equity award will be tied to performance, while the remaining portion will vest over the course of the fiscal year.

Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan sign MoUs on trade, terrorism and IT cooperation

BISHKEK: Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan signed several agreements and memorandums of understanding covering trade, climate change, counterterrorism, information technology and other areas during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to Kyrgyzstan.

The signing ceremony was held in Bishkek in the presence of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov. The two leaders later addressed a joint news conference.

Sharif described the transit trade agreement between Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan as a welcome development, saying the two countries would work together to expand bilateral trade. He said Pakistan wants to increase the trade volume with Kyrgyzstan to $200 million.

The prime minister said Lahore and the Kyrgyz city of Osh would be declared twin cities, a move he said would help strengthen cultural ties between the two countries.

Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan also agreed to cooperate in combating terrorism and extremism, while pledging to facilitate stronger commercial ties between their private sectors.

The two sides reached an understanding on cooperation to address climate change and agreed to promote collaboration in education, science and technology, and culture.

Sharif welcomed the establishment of a joint ministerial group to advance the CASA energy agreement. He said both countries would work to simplify regulations and procedures to facilitate greater bilateral trade.

The prime minister said Pakistan wants to further expand its brotherly relations with Kyrgyzstan, adding that the signing of the agreements marked the beginning of a new phase of bilateral cooperation.

Chinese President urges Middle East countries to oppose external interference

CAIRO: Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday urged Middle Eastern countries to oppose external interference and consider reshaping the region’s security architecture during his visit to Egypt.

Xi’s visit is his first trip to the Middle East in four years and comes as U.S. allies in the region reassess their strategic relationships amid months of conflict that have disrupted trade and economic activity.

Egypt, a major U.S. defense partner that receives about $1.3 billion in annual military assistance from Washington, has also been steadily expanding its economic and military cooperation with China in recent years.

According to China’s state-run Xinhua news agency, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi welcomed Xi after he arrived in Cairo.

Xi said countries in the region should take control of their own destiny and work toward establishing a new regional security framework.

The Chinese president also said Beijing was ready to work with regional countries to help protect maritime trade routes, according to Xinhua.

Pakistan cricket team meets King Charles in London

LONDON: British King Charles III met Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and discussed cricket as well as Pakistan’s efforts to combat terrorism and maintain peace and security.

The meeting took place at Clarence House, the historic London residence of the British royal family, where the Pakistan cricket team and officials attended an event with the king.

King Charles spoke with Pakistani players and team officials during the gathering. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi was also present at the event.

During his conversation with Naqvi, the British monarch discussed cricket and Pakistan’s counterterrorism efforts, according to the report.

King Charles also spoke about Pakistan’s efforts to restore and maintain law and order and promote peace in the country.

SHCC probes alleged medical negligence in private hospital of Karachi

KARACHI: The Sindh Healthcare Commission has launched an investigation into an alleged case involving a private hospital in Karachi’s Nazimabad area where a woman was reportedly subjected to a cesarean section despite not being pregnant.

According the CCTV footage showing the woman visiting the private hospital for medical examinations before the reported surgery.

According to the footage, the woman visited the hospital several times for medical checkups, accompanied by her husband. The case has raised questions about how hospital staff allegedly failed to determine that she was not pregnant despite repeated examinations.

The woman reportedly visited the hospital on Aug. 18 for a medical examination. She was also called to the hospital several times last month before the operation.

The CCTV footage has raised further questions about the hospital administration and medical staff, including whether appropriate diagnostic examinations were conducted before the alleged C-section.

The Sindh Healthcare Commission has begun investigating the matter to determine what happened and whether any medical or administrative negligence was involved.

China’s lung cancer deaths could reach 760,000 by 2030, study finds

A new study has projected that deaths from lung cancer in China could reach 760,000 annually by 2030, driven largely by population growth and the country’s rapidly aging population.

Lung cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in China. Researchers said the overall number of deaths is likely to continue rising despite a decline in age-standardized mortality rates.

Chinese researchers analyzed nationwide mortality data covering cancer and other causes between 2013 and 2021. The study included data from 605 surveillance centers, representing about 2.37 billion person-years of observation.

Researchers used several statistical methods to examine changes in lung cancer mortality and identify factors contributing to the disease burden. A person-year is a unit used to measure the amount of time people are observed in a study.

Smoking continues to be a major risk factor for lung cancer in China. Data from 2018 showed that about 26.6% of adults smoked cigarettes, while many nonsmokers were also exposed to secondhand smoke.

Air pollution and the effects of industrial development may also contribute to the overall burden of lung cancer, researchers said.

The study highlighted an important trend: although lung cancer mortality rates adjusted for age are declining, the total number of deaths could still increase as China’s population grows and the proportion of older people rises.

Researchers said public health planning should therefore address both preventable risk factors, particularly smoking and exposure to air pollution, and the growing impact of an aging population.

They emphasized that reducing tobacco use and other risk factors, alongside preparing health systems for an increasingly elderly population, will be essential to tackling China’s future lung cancer burden.

WhatsApp introduces passwords to replace 6-digit PIN for two-step verification

WhatsApp is rolling out a new password-based security feature that will allow users to replace the traditional six-digit PIN used for two-step verification, giving accounts an additional layer of protection against hacking.

The messaging platform currently relies on a six-digit PIN as part of its two-step verification system. Under the new system, users will be able to create passwords containing letters and numbers, making account protection more robust.

WhatsApp said the change is being introduced to strengthen account security. The feature is being rolled out gradually, so it may not be available to all users immediately. More users are expected to gain access to the option over the coming weeks.

Users who already have two-step verification enabled can upgrade their existing PIN to a password once the feature becomes available on their accounts.

To access the feature, open WhatsApp and go to Settings, then select Account and tap Two-step verification.

A new password option will appear for eligible users. Tap the option to create a password and, if desired, add a recovery email address to help regain access to the account.

The new password must contain at least eight characters, including at least one letter or number. Users can also add special characters, although these are optional.

As the feature is being introduced in phases, users who do not see the password option yet may need to wait until the update reaches their account.

Actress Katrina Kaif faces trolling over postpartum weight gain

Test captain Babar Azam develops fever after Lord’s Test defeat
