Faster biological aging may explain rising cancer rates among young adults

Faster biological

WASHINGTON: Faster biological aging may be one of the key factors behind the rising incidence of cancer among younger adults, according to a study by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine.

Cancer has traditionally been associated with older age, with the risk generally increasing as people grow older. However, cancer rates among people under 50 have increased in recent years, while the reasons for the trend remain unclear.

The researchers examined whether changes in biological age could help explain the increase.

Unlike chronological age, which is determined by a person’s date of birth, biological age reflects the condition and functioning of the body. Genetics, lifestyle and other factors can influence biological aging, which in turn can affect the risk of various diseases.

The study found that younger generations are experiencing faster increases in biological age compared with people from earlier generations.

Researchers said accelerated biological aging can lead to changes in cells, organs, metabolism and other body systems. A larger gap between biological and chronological age was associated with a higher risk of cancer among younger adults.

The effects were not uniform across the body, with accelerated biological aging appearing to be more pronounced in organs commonly associated with cancer.

The research team also noted that several factors, including body weight, declining metabolic health, alcohol consumption, prolonged sedentary behavior and unhealthy diets, can contribute to the risk of various cancers.

For the study, researchers analyzed data from more than 154,000 people and compared the findings with another group of about 10,000 participants.

The analysis found that biological age increased more rapidly among younger people in the study. The difference was particularly pronounced among people born between 1990 and 1999, whose rate of biological aging was 92% higher than that of people born between 1965 and 1969.

Further analysis indicated that accelerated biological aging was associated with an up to 8% increase in the risk of developing cancer at a younger age, with particularly notable associations involving lung and digestive-system cancers.

The findings were published in the journal Nature Medicine.

JD Vance says US foreign policy cannot follow Israel’s lead

JD Vance

WASHINGTON: US Vice President JD Vance said the United States cannot allow its Middle East foreign policy to become “subservient” to Israel and should prioritize American interests.

Speaking at a conference organized by the All-In Podcast, Vance described Israel as an important U.S. partner in military technology and intelligence sharing but said Washington does not always agree with the Israeli government.

Vance said President Donald Trump had shown a willingness to disagree with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when U.S. and Israeli interests differed.

He compared the relationship with Israel to Washington’s partnerships with NATO members, saying that maintaining important alliances does not mean making U.S. foreign policy subordinate to those partners.

“We’re gonna work with people when we work with them, we’re gonna disagree when we disagree. And we’re gonna pursue America’s interests,” Vance said.

US ambassador says Trump-Netanyahu ties remain strong

Separately, U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee said Trump and Netanyahu continue to have a strong relationship.

In an interview with Israeli media, Huckabee said the United States and Israel cooperate closely and rejected the suggestion that Washington’s involvement in the conflict with Iran was solely aimed at defending Israel. He said the United States was acting in its own interests.

Huckabee’s comments came as Vance emphasized that Washington would cooperate with Israel where interests align but would pursue an independent foreign policy when the two countries disagree.

Who is Zhang Yiming, Asia’s new richest person?

Who is Zhang

BEIJING: Zhang Yiming, founder of TikTok parent company ByteDance, has overtaken Indian businessman Gautam Adani to become Asia’s richest person, according to Bloomberg.

Zhang’s net worth has reached $105 billion, placing him 18th on Bloomberg’s list of the world’s richest people. Adani also has a fortune of about $105 billion but ranks 20th globally, according to the report.

Zhang’s wealth has increased by $40.3 billion this year, while Adani’s fortune has risen by $20.4 billion. Indian businessman Mukesh Ambani ranks third in Asia with a net worth of $81.3 billion.

Zhang’s fortune has increased eightfold since March 2019, with more than $12 billion added during September 2026 alone, according to Bloomberg.

Who is Zhang Yiming?

Despite being one of China’s and Asia’s wealthiest people, Zhang is known for maintaining a relatively private life, with limited information publicly available about his personal affairs.

Born in 1983 in China’s Fujian province, Zhang is the son of civil servants. His name is reportedly based on a Chinese proverb associated with surprising people on the first attempt.

Zhang graduated from Nankai University in 2005 with a degree in software engineering. He met his future wife at university, and the two later married.

After graduating, Zhang joined Kuxun, an internet company, in 2005 as one of its early employees and initially worked as an ordinary engineer. Within two years, he was managing a team of about 40 to 50 people.

Zhang has said his responsibilities expanded beyond technology when he became involved in product planning and other areas of the business. He has credited those early experiences with helping him develop the skills needed to build and manage companies.

He also recalled accompanying a sales director to meet a customer in 2007, saying the experience helped him understand what effective sales looked like. He later said those lessons proved useful when he founded his own company and recruited employees.

Before establishing ByteDance, Zhang also worked at Microsoft but eventually left to pursue his own business.

In 2012, he founded ByteDance, which later became globally known through TikTok and its Chinese counterpart, Douyin.

Interestingly, Zhang has said he initially did not regularly use TikTok. He described himself as an occasional viewer who rarely posted videos because he believed the platform was mainly aimed at young people.

He later made it a requirement for ByteDance employees to create TikTok videos and receive a specified number of likes, describing the move as a significant step for himself.

Rajpal Yadav gets two-week deadline to deposit 20mn

Rajpal Yadav

NEW DELHI: India’s Supreme Court has granted actor and comedian Rajpal Yadav two more weeks to deposit 20 million Indian rupees in connection with a long-running financial dispute involving a bounced-check case.

According to Indian media reports, a three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant gave Yadav a final two-week extension to deposit at least 20 million rupees with the Supreme Court registry.

The court said Yadav’s previous conduct was not sufficient to win its confidence. However, it granted the extension after his lawyer assured the bench that the actor would deposit the amount within the stipulated period and provide security for the remaining dues.

During the hearing, Chief Justice Surya Kant questioned whether the court could rely on Yadav’s assurance, referring to his past conduct.

The court also extended Yadav’s pre-arrest bail until the next hearing, scheduled for Oct. 5, and directed him to surrender his passport.

Background

Yadav reportedly borrowed 50 million rupees from a private entity in 2010 to finance Ata Pata Laapata, his directorial debut.

The film failed at the box office, leaving Yadav unable to repay the loan. With interest and other dues, the amount reportedly increased to around 90 million rupees, leading to a prolonged legal dispute.

Pakistan wins award for sustainable sovereign Panda bond

Pakistan wins

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has won an international award for issuing its first sustainable sovereign Panda bond, Adviser to the Finance Ministry Khurram Shehzad said Wednesday.

Shehzad said in a statement that investor demand for the bond was five times higher than the amount offered, reflecting strong interest in Pakistan’s debut sustainable Panda bond.

Pakistan issued the three-year bond worth 1.75 billion Chinese yuan in May 2026, with a coupon rate of 2.5%.

Shehzad said the Panda bond gave Pakistan access to a broader pool of institutional investors and further strengthened financial ties between Pakistan and China.

He said proceeds from the bond would be used to finance projects in the water, energy and health sectors.

The issuance is also expected to create new opportunities for green and socially inclusive investment in Pakistan, he said.

The award recognizes Pakistan’s entry into China’s domestic capital market through a sustainable sovereign bond and its efforts to diversify sources of external financing.

Pakistan protests Indian warship’s alleged EEZ violation

Pakistan protests

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Wednesday lodged a strong protest with India over what it described as provocative and irresponsible actions by Indian Navy vessel INS Kolkata in Pakistan’s Exclusive Economic Zone, saying the incident could have triggered a serious crisis.

Foreign Office spokesperson Sajjad Haider Khan said the Indian warship and its onboard helicopter had repeatedly attempted to enter the area where the Pakistan Navy has been conducting Sea Spark 26 exercises since Sept. 1.

According to Pakistan’s account, INS Kolkata carried out dangerous manoeuvres near Pakistan Navy vessels despite repeated warnings. The Foreign Office said the Indian vessel’s activities violated the 1991 bilateral agreement between Pakistan and India.

The Foreign Office said that on Sept. 15, INS Kolkata changed course dangerously and came into contact with Pakistan Navy vessel PNS Hunain. It said PNS Hunain attempted to avoid the collision, but the vessels made contact before the Indian ship increased speed and left the area.

Pakistan described the incident as highly provocative and said the professional conduct of its naval personnel prevented the situation from escalating further.

The Foreign Office said Pakistan viewed the alleged Indian naval violations with serious concern and called on India to respect international law and bilateral agreements.

It also accused India of presenting a distorted version of events and said the actions reflected an attempt to escalate the matter diplomatically.

The Foreign Office said India’s chargé d’affaires was summoned in Islamabad and a strong protest was conveyed over the incident. Pakistan also said its High Commission in New Delhi would deliver a formal protest note to India’s Ministry of External Affairs.

India, meanwhile, has presented a different account of the incident. Its Foreign Ministry said Wednesday that it had summoned Pakistan’s chargé d’affaires and lodged a protest over what it called the “unacceptable and unprofessional” conduct of Pakistani naval units that led to a collision with an Indian Navy vessel in international waters.

India said the incident caused no major damage and accused the Pakistani vessel of violating Article 10 of the 1991 agreement governing advance notice of military exercises, maneuvers and troop movements.

The conflicting accounts underscore heightened tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors following the maritime incident in the North Arabian Sea.
