Bangladesh approaches pivotal elections amid political shift

Bangladesh approaches

DHAKA: Bangladesh is set to hold general elections on Thursday, February 12, 2026, widely regarded as one of the most significant polls in the country’s 55-year history.

The elections are taking place following the fall of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government in August 2024, after a student-led movement against her rule. The unrest turned violent, leaving nearly 1,400 people dead. Sheikh Hasina remained in power from 1996 to 2001 and again from 2009 until 2024.

Following her removal, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus assumed leadership of the interim government, with a mandate to ensure transparent, free and fair elections.

Bangladesh has a population of more than 173 million, making it the world’s eighth most populous country.

According to the Election Commission, around 127 million citizens are registered to vote, including approximately five million first-time voters. Nearly 44 percent of registered voters are between the ages of 18 and 37, highlighting the significant role of the country’s youth in shaping the electoral outcome.

One of the world’s most densely populated countries, Bangladesh has an average of 1,366 people per square kilometre. The capital, Dhaka, home to over 37 million residents, is expected to play a decisive role in determining election results. Muslims make up more than 90 percent of the population, while Hindus account for about 8 percent, with other religions forming the remainder.

Over the past 25 years, Bangladesh has achieved notable economic growth. However, growth slowed to 3.97 percent in the fiscal year ending June 2025, down from 4.22 percent previously. The country’s gross domestic product (GDP) stands at $461 billion, while per capita income is approximately $1,990, reflecting ongoing challenges related to poverty reduction and economic diversification.

Bangladesh operates under a parliamentary system, where executive authority rests with the prime minister, who forms the cabinet, formulates policy and oversees governance. The president serves as the ceremonial head of state and is elected by parliament for a five-year term.

Legislative authority lies with the 350-member National Parliament (Jatiya Sangsad), comprising 300 directly elected members and 50 seats reserved for women. Administratively, the country is divided into eight divisions, 64 districts and 495 sub-districts.

A total of 51 political parties are contesting 1,981 seats nationwide, alongside 249 independent candidates. Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League is currently suspended and is not participating in the elections, marking a major shift in the country’s political landscape.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Tarique Rahman, son of former prime minister Khaleda Zia, is contesting 292 of the 300 directly elected seats, in alliance with more than half a dozen smaller parties.

The BNP’s campaign focuses on financial assistance for low-income families, limiting the prime minister’s tenure to ten years, promoting economic growth through foreign investment, and strengthening anti-corruption measures. Opinion polls suggest the alliance holds a narrow lead, reflecting public appetite for political change after years of Awami League dominance.

Jamaat-e-Islami, led by Shafiqur Rahman, has formed an alliance with the National Citizen Party (NCP), a moderate political group established by youth leaders of the 2024 movement.

The alliance is contesting 224 seats under Jamaat-e-Islami and 30 under the NCP, with remaining seats allocated to smaller parties. The bloc advocates governance based on Islamic principles, economic diversification beyond the garment sector, and stronger relations with neighbouring countries. Analysts believe the alliance could play a significant role in parliament even without securing an outright majority.

Pakistan to invest $1bn in Artificial Intelligence sector by 2030

Pakistan to invest

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that the federal government will invest $1 billion in Pakistan’s artificial intelligence (AI) sector by 2030, aiming to build a future-ready digital economy and empower the country’s youth.

Addressing the inaugural session of Indus AI Week, the prime minister said the investment would be used to develop a strong and inclusive AI ecosystem across the country.

He revealed that AI will be introduced into the curriculum of all federally run schools, while 1,000 fully funded PhD scholarships in artificial intelligence will be offered nationwide by 2030.

In a major skills initiative, the prime minister also announced the launch of a nationwide programme to train one million non-IT professionals in AI-related skills, with the goal of improving productivity and enhancing livelihoods across various sectors.

“We are recovering lost revenues through technology and equipping our young men and women with quality skills in agriculture, commerce and trade,” Shehbaz Sharif said.

Highlighting ongoing digital reforms, the prime minister referred to initiatives such as the laptop distribution programme for high-achieving students in Punjab, establishment of e-libraries in remote areas, introduction of e-stamp papers, and digitisation of land records in collaboration with the World Bank, which he said had helped reduce corruption.

He also noted that Pakistan’s first Safe City project and first IT university were established in Lahore. “We have learned from the past, and today Pakistan is ready to join the global community in AI-driven transformation,” he added.

Minister for Information Technology Shaza Fatima Khawaja said Indus AI Week aims to strengthen collaboration between universities, government institutions and international technology companies, underscoring Pakistan’s commitment to a digital revolution.

She added that the Pakistan Digital Authority is preparing a nationwide digital master plan to guide future transformation.

Meanwhile, Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal said the world has entered an era where intelligence itself has become a key factor of production, with nations now competing on ideas, talent, data and technology rather than traditional commodities.

He described artificial intelligence as a greater disruptor than electricity or the internet, noting that Pakistan’s engagement with technology began more than two decades ago through early IT policies, the establishment of NADRA, and sustained investment in advanced human capital.

Instagram, YouTube face California court test in user addiction case

Instagram

A California state court case over whether Instagram and YouTube harmed a woman’s mental health through addictive app design kicks off on Monday, February 9, 2026, with opening statements, in a test of whether Big Tech platforms can be held liable for harming kids.

According to court filings the women She says the attention-grabbing design of the platforms got her addicted to them at a young age, She alleges the apps fueled her depression and suicidal thoughts, and she is seeking to hold the companies liable.

The case was unveiled after a 20-year-old woman identified as K.G.M. filed the lawsuit against Facebook and Instagram parent company Meta Platforms and Alphabet’s Google, which owns YouTube.

A verdict against the tech companies could smooth the way for similar cases in state court, and shake the industry’s longstanding U.S. legal defense against claims of user harm.

Previously, Google, Meta, TikTok and Snapchat faced thousands of lawsuits in California.

Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg is expected to be called as a witness at the trial, which is likely to stretch into March 2026.

Moreover, TikTok and Snapchat settled with K.G.M. before the trial.

Furthermore, the woman’s lawyers aim to show that the companies were negligent in their design of the apps, that they failed to warn the public about the risks, and that the platforms were a substantial factor in her injuries.

If they succeed, the jury will consider whether to award her damages for pain and suffering and could also impose punitive damages.

Meta and Google plan to defend themselves from the claims by pointing to other factors in K.G.M.’s life, laying out their work on youth safety, and trying to distance themselves from users who upload harmful content.

Under U.S. law, internet companies are largely shielded from liability for material their users post.

If the jury in this case rejects that defense, it could pave the way for other lawsuits claiming the platforms are harmful by design.

In addition to cases like K.G.M.’s in state court, the companies face more than 2,300 similar lawsuits filed by parents, school districts, and state attorneys general in federal court.

The judge overseeing those is weighing the companies’ liability protections ahead of the first trial over the claims in federal court, which could happen as early as June.

Also on Monday, a landmark trial against Meta is kicking off with opening statements in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where the state attorney general has accused the company of exposing children and teens to sexual exploitation on its platforms and profiting from it.

Additionally, the wave of litigation in the U.S. is part of a global backlash against social media platforms over children’s mental health. Australia and Spain have prohibited access to social media platforms for users under age 16, and other countries are considering similar curbs.

SBP’s mid-year policy

ISLAMABAD: The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Monday released its biannual Monetary Policy Report, highlighting a noticeable improvement in the country’s macroeconomic conditions and outlook, supported by a cautious monetary policy stance and ongoing fiscal consolidation.

As a result, Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves are projected to reach $18 billion by June 2026 and further increase in FY2027, approaching nearly three months of import cover.

The report also noted that continued macroeconomic stability, easing financial conditions, and the recent reduction in the Cash Reserve Requirement (CRR) to 5 percent have contributed to stronger economic activity.

Consequently, growth prospects have improved, with real GDP growth for FY2026 now projected between 3.75 and 4.75 percent, while economic growth is expected to strengthen further in FY2027, reflecting a gradual and sustained recovery trajectory.
