Lahore Emerges as the Most Polluted City Globally

Lahore emerges

LAHORE: The provincial capital recorded one of the worst air quality readings in the world on Monday, with Lahore ranked as the most polluted city globally.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Lahore’s Air Quality Index (AQI) surged to 332, placing it in the “hazardous” category. Faisalabad followed closely with an AQI of 325, while Sheikhupura recorded 311, Dera Ghazi Khan 239, Gujranwala 233, and Multan 224.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classification, an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading between 0 and 100 is considered clean and healthy, while 101 to 200 falls under the “moderately polluted but tolerable” category.

AQI readings between 300 and 500 are classified as polluted to severely polluted, posing serious health risks—particularly for individuals with heart and respiratory diseases who may experience breathing difficulties during prolonged exposure.

The EPA further states that when the AQI exceeds 500, the air quality is deemed extremely hazardous, with potential health impacts even on otherwise healthy individuals.

The Punjab government has made it mandatory for motorcycle riders to wear face masks amid worsening air pollution across the province.

Experts have warned that the worsening air quality poses serious health risks, urging residents to limit outdoor activities and wear protective masks when necessary.

Hindu community observes Diwali, festival of lights

Hindu community

KARACHI: Hindu communities in Pakistan and across the globe marked the festival of Diwali on Monday, observing the occasion with traditional rituals, prayers, and festive celebrations.

Special ceremonies are being organized in temples to mark the occasion, where devotees light earthen lamps in remembrance of Lord Rama’s return, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness.

The festival commemorates the sacrifices of Shri Ram Chandra Ji, who spent nearly fourteen years in exile, spreading the teachings and values of Hinduism.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended his heartfelt greetings and best wishes to the Hindu community in Pakistan and abroad on the joyous occasion of Diwali.

In a message on the occasion of Diwali, President said, “As our Hindu citizens and millions around the world celebrate Diwali, this festival reminds us of the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.”

He said, “The celebration of Diwali reminds us of the universal values of peace, compassion and harmony that are shared across faiths. These values are at the heart of our national life and reflect the principles of mutual respect and coexistence that Islam itself upholds.”

“The Constitution of Pakistan guarantees equal rights and complete freedom of religion to all citizens, reaffirming our commitment to a society where people of every faith live together in dignity and mutual respect,” he added.

The President said, “Our founding father, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah envisioned a Pakistan where minorities would enjoy equal rights and opportunities and where every citizen could freely practice their religion. The Hindu community has been an integral part of our social, cultural, and economic fabric since the country’s inception. Their contributions in education, commerce, and public service have enriched our shared national life.”

“To our Hindu community across Pakistan, I convey my sincere wishes for happiness, prosperity, and peace. May the light of Diwali bring joy to your homes and strengthen the bonds that unite us as one nation. Happy Diwali,” he concluded.

He expressed the pleasure over Pakistanis from Hindu and other minority communities working shoulder to shoulder with their Muslim countrymen for the progress of our country.

President, Bilawal pay glowing tribute to Shaheed Benazir Bhutto

President

ISLAMABAD: On the 18th anniversary of the Karsaz tragedy, President Asif Ali Zardari and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari honoured the memory of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for democracy.

He said that from that day until her martyrdom, her life and sacrifice remained a source of guidance and strength for all those who stood for democracy and peace.

The president said that Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto returned to Pakistan on this day despite clear threats to her life, adding she remained resolute after the terrorist attack at Karsaz and continued her struggle for the restoration of democracy.

“Recalling the events that followed, the president said that she visited hospitals and neighbourhoods the next day to meet the injured and console the bereaved families, reflecting her deep concern for her workers and the people of Pakistan,” President Secretariat Press Wing said in a press release.

As the nation continued to confront terrorism and extremism, the courage and sacrifice of the martyrs of the Karsaz tragedy reinforced their resolve to defeat all such forces, he further added.

Chairman Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has paid glowing tribute to the martyrs of the Karsaz tragedy on its 18th anniversary, honoring their unshakable courage, unwavering loyalty, and supreme sacrifices for democracy.

In his message, Bilawal said October 18, 2007, is etched forever in the nation’s memory, marking the day when over 3 million people gathered to welcome Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto back to her homeland.

He said it was also the day when 180 brave party workers laid down their lives for the dream of a democratic Pakistan.

Bilawal recalled that dictatorship and terrorism had joined hands to launch a heinous attack on Benazir Bhutto’s caravan. “Those who attacked the caravan of Benazir wanted to extinguish the light of democracy — but the blood of our martyrs only made it shine brighter,” he said.

He vowed to carry forward the mission of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto and the martyrs of Karsaz, reaffirming his commitment to building a Pakistan where democracy, equality, and justice prevail.

“The blood of our martyrs continues to illuminate our journey toward a peaceful, democratic, and prosperous Pakistan,” Bilawal Bhutto Zardari added.

PCB responds after Afghanistan withdraws from tri-nation series

PCB

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has issued a statement following Afghanistan Cricket Board’s (ACB) announcement that it will not participate in the upcoming Tri-Nation T20 Series scheduled to be held in Pakistan in November.

Earlier, the ACB confirmed in an official statement that Afghanistan will not take part in the series, which was set to feature Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan.

Responding to the development, a PCB spokesperson said that the Tri-Nation T20 Series will proceed as per schedule, adding that discussions are underway to invite a replacement team. “Arrangements are ongoing, and a final decision will be made soon,” the spokesperson added.

The Tri-Nation T20 Tournament is scheduled to take place in Pakistan from November 17 to 29, with Pakistan and Sri Lanka confirmed as participating teams.

Meanwhile, diplomatic sources indicate that Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban administration have agreed to maintain the ceasefire, signaling a potential easing of tensions amid broader regional developments.

French PM Lecornu survives twin no-confidence votes

French PM Lecornu

PARIS:  French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu narrowly escaped two no-confidence votes on Friday, as opposition efforts to unseat him fell short amid growing divisions and political turbulence in the National Assembly.

Both motions required 289 votes in favour to pass. The first, initiated by the far-left La France Insoumise (LFI), narrowly failed by just 18 votes, reflecting growing discontent within the National Assembly.

The second motion — backed by Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally (RN) — was widely expected to fail, as most lawmakers avoided aligning with the far-right bloc.

While Lecornu remains in office for now, recent history shows how fragile his position could be. Last month, François Bayrou was forced to step down after calling a vote of no-confidence in himself, while Michel Barnier resigned in December 2024 after losing a similar vote.

The Prime Minister now faces the difficult task of steering a minority government through the upcoming 2026 budget negotiations and managing an increasingly fragmented National Assembly, where consensus is harder than ever to achieve.

Trump claims he can easily end Pakistan–Afghanistan conflict

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has said that ending the ongoing hostilities between Pakistan and Afghanistan would be “very easy” for him, asserting his ability to resolve conflicts and restore peace in the region.

Speaking to journalists, Trump referenced recent cross-border clashes and said he would consider brokering a ceasefire if needed, describing such an intervention as straightforward compared with other foreign-policy challenges he has tackled.

The US president also repeated remarks that Pakistan’s prime minister had told him he had helped avert a wider India–Pakistan conflict — a claim that Trump says saved “millions of lives.” Pakistani leaders have publicly praised US mediation at recent international meetings, comments that have drawn attention amid rising regional tensions.

Trump’s comments come as world leaders urge restraint and regional interlocutors explore avenues for de-escalation. Several governments and international organizations continue to call for immediate ceasefires and diplomatic talks to prevent further loss of life and wider instability.

It should be remembered that after dozens of deaths in Pakistan’s targeted operations on the hideouts of Taliban and Fitnah-ul-Khawarij in Afghanistan, a temporary ceasefire was decided for the next 48 hours from 6 pm on the request of Afghan Taliban.

A 48-hour ceasefire was initially held between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban regime, but today it has been agreed to extend the ceasefire further.

In this regard, the international news agency said that the ceasefire between Pakistan and Afghanistan has been extended until the completion of negotiations in Doha.

The former actress captioned her post with the words “Qubool Hai” (I accept), but did not reveal any details about her husband — not even his name.

Zaira Wasim’s wedding photos have since gone viral across social media, with fans and followers extending their warm wishes and prayers for her new journey in life.

It is worth recalling that Zaira Wasim, who rose to fame as a child star in the blockbuster film “Dangal,” bid farewell to Bollywood in 2019 citing religious reasons.

In a lengthy social media post at the time, she explained that while her acting career had brought her fame and respect, it had also distanced her from her faith and caused the blessings in her life to fade, prompting her decision to leave the industry.

Prince William Sets Strict Conditions for Reconciliation with Harry as Tensions Continue to Simmer

In a new development in the royal family’s ongoing rift, Prince William is reportedly open to the possibility of reconciliation with his younger brother, Prince Harry — but only under strict conditions.

A source close to the royal household told Heat Magazine that William is not completely closed off to mending fences, especially given King Charles’ health concerns and the symbolic weight of the upcoming holiday season. Geo News

However, while the door may not be entirely shut, William is making it clear that peace talks would not be casual or unstructured. The source said that any meeting would have to be “a supervised discussion handled with total discretion,” rather than an informal or impromptu encounter. Geo News

This stance contrasts with the cautious optimism represented by Harry’s recent efforts to reconnect — including a private meeting with the King in September, which lasted nearly an hour and marked the first public father-son contact in about 18 months. International Business Times UK+1

Yet, some insiders remain skeptical about any rapprochement between William and Harry. According to Harper’s Bazaar, William has not forgiven Harry for publicly airing private family matters — particularly those revealed in Harry’s memoir Spare — and might only agree to a symbolic meeting to preserve appearances. For now, the situation stands in uneasy balance: a possible thawing of relations with the King on one side, and a brotherly reunion held hostage by conditions, trust issues, and public scrutiny on the other.

Royal Thaw? Prince William Softens on Brother Harry, Praises Charity Amid Unresolved Feud

In a glimmer of hope for the fractured House of Windsor, insiders reveal Prince William is quietly warming to estranged brother Prince Harry, lauding his charitable endeavors while grappling with deep-seated pain from past betrayals.

The future king, sources say, views Harry as a “very vulnerable character who’s doing some good in the world” through high-impact initiatives like the Invictus Games for wounded veterans and Sentebale for AIDS-affected youth in Africa.

Yet, forgiveness remains elusive. William is “deeply hurt” by Harry’s explosive Oprah Winfrey interview in 2021 and revelations in his 2023 memoir Spare, which painted the royal family in unflattering light and strained ties with Meghan Markle. “He remembers the good times when they could knock back a few beers and enjoy sports games together, rambles, hunting trips, holidays away,” a close source told Heat Magazine, underscoring the loneliness of their rift. The absence stings further as their children—William and Kate’s Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis; Harry’s Archie and Lilibet—grow up as strangers, a “tragic” void insiders decry.

Influenced by wife Catherine’s “merciful, Christian attitude,” William acknowledges their late mother, Princess Diana, and grandmother Queen Elizabeth II “would never have wanted this feud to have dragged on for so long.” With the 30th anniversary of Diana’s 1997 death looming in 2027, the prince is “slowly softening,” pondering dialogue “in the interests of decency.”

Publicly, the brothers’ last joint appearance was the poignant 2021 unveiling of Diana’s statue, marred by awkwardness. Harry’s recent U.S. tours promoting mental health via Heads Together offshoots have caught William’s eye, hinting at shared values amid Harry’s independent path post-Megxit.

Royal watchers speculate a low-key outreach—perhaps a private call or neutral-ground meet—could mend fences before King Charles III’s reign advances. For now, the palace stays mum, but this whisper of reconciliation offers a rare uplift in the Windsors’ saga of loyalty, loss, and legacy.
